Joao Pedro will miss Brighton & Hove Albion’s last game of the season at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday for disciplinary reasons.
The Athletic revealed on Tuesday that Joao Pedro was left out of Monday’s 3-2 home win against Liverpool following an altercation in training with team-mate Jan Paul van Hecke.

Head coach Fabian Hurzeler confirmed the forward would not be selected for the trip to Tottenham but described the matter as “closed”.
“Joao won’t be in the squad,” Hurzeler said during his press conference on Friday, speaking for the first time about the incident.
“With Joao we had a small issue in training, the type that isn’t uncommon from time to time at all clubs,” Hurzeler continued. “It has been dealt with internally the matter is closed.
“He is an incredible footballer, that’s why we invested in him, him but there are principle that are non-negotiable where we don’t make any compromises. He is still a young player. He will learn from this and can continue to grow.”
Brighton still have a chance of qualifying for the Europa Conference League and need a draw at Tottenham to guarantee finishing eighth.
Brighton need to retain eighth spot, Chelsea to drop out of the Champions League places and then win the Europa Conference League final against Real Betis in Poland on Wednesday in order for Hurzeler’s side to qualify for the same competition.
‘Joao Pedro altercation gives Brighton dilemma’ – analysis
Joao Pedro has been Brighton’s main goal scorer across two seasons at the club since a £30million move from Watford in the summer of 2023. He has found the net 30 times in 70 appearances.
The Brazilian is an expert at penalties, 15 of those goals having come from the spot in 16 attempts. Even when Joao Pedro’s penalty was saved by Robin Olsen against Aston Villa near the end of last season, he headed in the rebound to earn a 1-0 win.
Although Joao Pedro is a reliable goalscorer, he has a volatile temperament. A red card for lashing out at opponent Nathan Collins in a 4-2 defeat at Brentford last month did not go down well with team-mates or Hurzeler.
Brighton were 3-1 down against opponents rivalling them to reach Europe, but there was still time to recover when he was sent-off in the 61st minute.

Hurzeler places great importance on the squad environment and spirit of togetherness. There is no denying Joao Pedro’s talent, more as a No 10 than a No 9, but the spat with van Hecke exposes a dilemma for the club — whether or not his talent and goals make the disruptive traits bearable.
