Friedhelm Funkel (71) hat die Kaugummi-Verhandlungen mit dem 1. FC Köln abgebrochen.
Am Freitag sagte er Sportdirektor Thomas Kessler (39) unter vier Augen: „Ich mache es nicht!“ Gegenüber SPORT BILD erklärt der Aufstiegstrainer des Traditionsklubs, was zu dem Schritt geführt hat, dass er nicht mit der Mannschaft in die Bundesliga geht. Und er kündigt an: „Ich mache als Trainer weiter. Das war es noch nicht.“
Kessler kämpfte intern seit dem Aufstieg am Sonntag um eine Verlängerung mit Funkel. Aber er konnte sich keiner Mehrheit sicher sein. „Ich will nicht sieben, acht, neun oder zehn Tage warten“, sagt Funkel. „Ich habe nicht das volle Vertrauen für eine weitere Zusammenarbeit gespürt. Und ich möchte nicht der Trainer sein, der am Ende bleiben kann, weil andere abgesagt haben.“
[–>Bitter für den FC. Damit wurde der Mann verprellt, dem sowohl die Mannschaft als auch Experten und die Fans die größten Erfolgschancen in der Bundesliga zugetraut hatten. Funkel: „Beim FC entscheiden sieben Leute über diese Personalie. Ich hatte das Gefühl, dass zu wenige dahinterstehen.“
Mit seiner Absage entgeht er einem internen Machtkampf um seinen Vertrag. Funkel ist zu erfahren, um einen Job anzutreten, bei dem die ersten im eigenen Verein schon auf ein Scheitern lauern. Thomas Kessler nimmt er ausdrücklich aus, sagt: „Thomas hat es richtig gut gemacht. Er hat um eine Lösung gekämpft. Ich bin überzeugt, dass er der richtige Mann für diesen Job ist.“

Kessler war erst am Donnerstag als Sportdirektor bestätigt worden. Er ersetzt den Anfang Mai gefeuerten Christian Keller (46). Jetzt muss er wieder einen neuen Trainer suchen. Es war Kessler, der als erste Amtshandlung als Interims-Manager Funkel verpflichtet hatte. Ein Glücksgriff. Mit dem erfahrenen Trainer gewann Köln die letzten beiden Saisonspiele und stieg als Zweitliga-Meister auf.
Funkel: „Ich war nicht mit dem Gedanken in das Gespräch mit Thomas gegangen, dass ich aufhöre. Aber ich fühle mich gut mit der Entscheidung. Dem FC wünsche ich alles Gute. Es ist ein toller Verein.“

Major League Baseball is acknowledging that there has been more drag on the baseballs used in games this season, resulting in long fly balls traveling four feet less than they did last year.The confirmation from MLB responded to a report by The Athletic, which reviewed fly ball and drag information available to the public.
