Domácí plány se ocitly v rozvalinách hned v první třetině. Mistrovský forčekink využil v 77. sekundě Gustav Forsling, pak z brankoviště dorážel Matthew Tkachuk a v přesilovce tečí zvyšoval Sam Bennett. Jakmile sudí na začátku druhé části oznámili, že snížení Sebastiana Aha neplatí kvůli předchozímu ofsajdu, propadli už diváci v Lenovo Center trudnomyslnosti.
Ale zabijácký instinkt Panthers nikam nezmizel. Když neměl domácí Jack Roslovic v ruce hokejku, trefil se počtvrté Carter Verhaeghe. A ve ztichlé a mnohými diváky opuštěné hale pak ještě završil debakl Caroliny vymazlenou tečí kapitán Floridy Aleksander Barkov. Chyběla už jen závěrečná znělka z pořadu Možná přijde i kouzelník: „Tak my už jdeme do finále…“
Z posledních čtyř utkání na cizích ledech ve vyřazovací části mají Panthers skóre 22:4. Zatím ale nepředbíhejme, vedení 2:0 ještě neznamená konec. Florida se však těší na domácí odvety a Hurricanes vypadají v konfrontaci s obhájci naprosto bezradně.
„Když jsem na konci první třetiny viděl, že má Carolina jen tři střely na branku, nechtělo se mi tomu věřit,“ divil se kouč Panthers Paul Maurice. Za 40 minut jich domácí vyslali na Sergeje Bobrovského jen sedm. A na šestou nulu v play off v kariéře stačilo ruskému brankáři pouze 17 zásahů. Zatímco v základní části byli Hurricanes druhým nejčastěji střílejícím týmem (31,7 na zápas), teď se ani nebyli k účinným pokusům schopni dostat.
Co fungovalo v úvodních dvou sériích proti New Jersey a Washingtonu (4:1 a 4:1 na zápasy), se absolutně míjí účinkem v soubojích se zkušenými harcovníky Floridy. Ti za poslední tři sezony hrají už jedenáctou sérii play off a mají rázně nakročeno do dvanácté.
Temné prokletí konferenčních finále v podání Caroliny tak stále trvá. V roce 2009 podlehli Hurricanes v této fázi 0:4 Pittsburghu, o deset let později se stejný výsledek opakoval s Bostonem a totéž nastalo před dvěma lety s Floridou. V součtu s letoškem to znamená 14 porážek v řadě…
„Je to psychická záležitost,“ prohlásil kapitán Caroliny Jordan Staal. „Do hlavy se vám mohou dostat temné myšlenky, které vás dokážou ovládnout. A to není nikdy dobře.“ Jestli se jich Hurricanes dokážou zbavit, se uvidí v noci na neděli ve třetím zápase, tentokrát v Sunrise.
