Brock Purdy’s selflessness shines through while 49ers set example for Jerry Jones’ Cowboys

The San Francisco 49ers have their future secured. This week, the team handed Brock Purdy a five-year, $265 million contract extension that keeps him with the team through 2030. Purdy’s contract was set to run out after the 2025 season, but Niners GM John Lynch made sure to avoid any type of holdout, making his franchise quarterback happy.

Lynch had nothing to worry about, though. Purdy, the former “Mr. Irrelevant” who made Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance expendable, has revealed that he had no intentions of holding out. Purdy’s humbleness has stood out several times through his three-year NFL career, and it’s a part of what has made him so liked by his teammates.

Brock Purdy had no intentions of holding out for a bigger contract, but he got it anyway

While speaking to local radio a few days after signing his contract, Purdy explained why he was never going to hold out, regardless of his contract situation.

The Pros and Cons of 49ers QB Brock Purdy’s $265 Million Extension

I think, for me, being here and getting better at football, I don’t think that [holding out] was ever going to be a question for me. I wanted to be here, and continue to build off of what we’ve done the last couple of years, and not let the negotiations and the money get in the way of that. I had faith that that was going to get done when it needed to, and obviously, I wouldn’t have liked that to go right up until the season.

The 49ers got out ahead of the quarterback rush, locking up Purdy on a contract that many consider a “steal” given Purdy’s production and the signal-callers who are making more than him. That’s in stark contrast to the Dallas Cowboys, who have somewhat been taken advantage of by Dak Prescott.

Prescott is still the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, having signed his deal hours before the start of the 2024 NFL season, which left Jerry Jones and co. without leverage. We saw something similar happen with CeeDee Lamb, and it seems like Micah Parsons is about to add to that list. Jones could learn a thing or two from how Lynch operates.

Andrew Abbott’s worst start of the year comes at a bad time for the Reds

PHOENIX — After Cincinnati Reds starter Zack Littell went just three innings in Friday’s 11-inning loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the team needed lefty Andrew Abbott not only to pitch well Saturday, but also to pitch deep into the game. The Reds’ All-Star did neither. In his first 22 starts of the season, Abbott gave up three runs total in the first inning. Saturday in Phoenix, he allowed three runs in the first inning alone. Abbott gave up a season-high seven runs in four innings in the Reds’ 10-1 loss Saturday. The loss, coupled with the New York Mets’ victory in Atlanta, dropped the Reds (67-63) to 2 1/2 games back for the final wild-card spot in the National League.Advertisement“We’re not really worrying about that,” Abbott said. “We’re not really scoreboard watching; we’re just trying to go out each day and […]

Aidan O’Connell, Raiders backup QB, fractures wrist in preseason finale

Las Vegas Raiders No. 2 quarterback Aidan O’Connell fractured his right wrist during the second quarter of Saturday’s preseason loss to the Arizona Cardinals, according to Raiders head coach Pete Carroll.Carroll said the injury will require surgery, and that O’Connell is expected to be out for six to eight weeks. Cam Miller, a sixth-round rookie out of North Dakota State and the third QB on the depth chart, played the rest of Saturday’s game after O’Connell’s injury, completing 12-of-24 passes for 102 yards.Advertisement“We just got to see what we can do and keep developing Cam,” Carroll said Saturday. “Fortunately, he got a lot of playing time tonight, and that’ll help him.” When asked directly if Miller is ready to be the top backup for starter Geno Smith, Carroll was non-committal. The Raiders have a chance to make an addition to […]
