Halbfinale beim Final4 der European League gegen Montpellier HB aus Frankreich in fast letzter Sekunde 31:32 verloren. Eine Niederlage, die sich auf die Top6 der Daikin Handball-Bundesliga auswirken kann.

Handball-Bundesliga: Reicht Platz 5 nicht für Europa?
Die Ausgangslage: Platz 1 und 2 der Bundesliga führen in die Champions League, die Ränge 3 und 4 in die European League. Landet der Pokalsieger, diese Saison der THW Kiel, auf einem der ersten vier Plätze, würde der unterlegene Gegner aus dem Pokal-Finale (MT Melsungen) nachrücken.
Belegt auch der Pokal-Vize einen der ersten vier Plätze, wird ein sechster Startplatz für die Bundesliga in der European League heiß. Und da kommt das Final4 der European League ins Spiel.
Hätte Kiel die Franzosen aus Montpellier geschlagen, wäre Rang 6 der Bundesliga kommende Saison für Europa klar gewesen. Sofern nicht ausgerechnet der THW Kiel am Ende Bundesliga-Sechster wird. Dann wäre Platz 5 (aktuell TSV Hannover-Burgdorf) zwar schon für den Briefkopf: Aber auch gleichbedeutend mit dem Aus für die European League, sofern die Europäische Handballföderation (EHF) nicht über z.B. „Wild Cards“ die Teilnahme regelt.

Hätte, hätte – Fahrradkette. Vor dem Hamburger Final4 täuschten sich Experten in ihrem Glauben, dass man bei drei deutschen Halbfinal-Teilnehmern auf ein rein deutsches Endspiel wetten könne.
Sollte Montpellier davon gehört haben, hat es die Franzosen bestimmt nicht demotiviert. Kiels Sport-Geschäftsführer Viktor Szilagyi am Dyn-Mikro: „Da braucht man einige Zeit bis man realisiert, was das bedeutet. Montpellier hat das besser gelöst.“
Innerhalb der Top6 der Bundesliga kommt es noch zu vier direkten Duellen: Füchse Berlin – MT Melsungen (29. Mai, 20 Uhr), SG Flensburg – TSV Hannover-Burgdorf (1. Juni, 16.30 Uhr), TSV Hannover-Burgdorf – THW Kiel (4. Juni, 19 Uhr) und SC Magdeburg – SG Flensburg (4. Juni, 20 Uhr, alles live bei Dyn/Anzeige).
