Ruben Amorim has outlined the “advantage” of Manchester United being clear of European football next season by saying it will allow him time to prepare his team for intensity of the Premier League.
United have touched down in Kuala Lumpur for the first leg of their post-season tour to Asia, where they will play against ASEAN All Stars on Wednesday before flying to Hong Kong for a friendly on Friday.

Trips will be sparse during the next campaign with United’s 15th place finish and failure to win the Europa League meaning they missed out on Champions League qualification.
But Amorim said: “I have to say that for us not to be in the Champions League, could be an advantage to perform well, to perform better, to prepare better the games, to build that core we need for the future. So I think it’s a good thing for us to take advantage.
“The target I won’t to tell you. If you want the target: win the first game. We have a lot to do, during this summer, you have to prepare the team.
“When you are in Manchester United, people are going to expect us to be to be on the top, but we have to understand the context, so I don’t want the team to think about a big target, just a small target. Winning the first game, and then we pass to the second game.”
Amorim was speaking at a press conference to mark United’s arrival in Malaysia, with chief executive Omar Berrada among a packed audience as the topic turned to the transfer window, which opens on June 1.
Amorim added: “Omar is there, he can explain better than me. We always prepare two plans, one with Champions League, one without.
“Without Champions League we also don’t need a big squad, we can control in a better way. Then we have a plan that is to bring some new players of course. Our big plan is to improve the team we have, improve academy, that is our future, as was in past.
“It’s not going to change so much. We have financial fair play rules, we are not allowed to do so much this summer, even with Champions League. Important thing is to stick together. We are going to struggle, is not going to be everything right away. I have a feeling the team improving, that is the most important thing.”
Several academy players have joined United’s squad for the tour, and Amorim said doing so will be a good experience for them to appreciate the scale of the club. Some 60,000 tickets are said to have been sold for Wednesday’s match at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium.

Amorim said: “We had six months with all of the players that are here and many of them we use in training, so we know the players. But specifically for this kind of game we try to bring all the players in different positions.
“For next season we will see, but it’s a good opportunity to see the young players and sometimes we have surprises like Ayden (Heaven) every time he played he proved that he’s a first-team player.”

Amorim sounded a note of caution on those players coming through however. “Sometimes issue is we push too much in beginning,” he said. “That sometimes is really hard because you have social media, all this pressure around kids that is hard to control.
“I don’t want to say any names, I believe in all of the them, sometimes you get surprises. My job is to give them tools and the opportunity, and then try to protect them, because this is a massive club. That is a big question in our club, sometimes we put our kids on a pedestal, and it is important to change because we have to control that.”
