Der ehemalige Hoffenheim-Trainer Pellegrino Matarazzo (47) spricht im Interview über chaotische Monate bei seinem Ex-Klub, Gespräche mit der US-Nationalmannschaft und seine Zukunft.

SPORT BILD: Herr Matarazzo, Sie sind studierter Mathematiker. Wie hoch ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit prozentual, dass wir Sie nächste Saison wieder am Spielfeldrand sehen?

Pellegrino Matarazzo: Das ist eine sehr schwierige Rechnung mit sehr vielen Variablen, die da einfließen und die ich nicht beeinflussen kann. Dafür bräuchte ich jetzt zu lange (lacht).

[–>Dann versuchen Sie es doch mal ohne Rechnung.

Ich kann mir sehr gut vorstellen, in die nächste Saison einzusteigen. Es muss nicht im Sommer sein, kann es aber. Es kann auch im Herbst passieren. Ich glaube, dass ich für unterschiedliche Märkte interessant sein kann. Ich spreche Englisch, Deutsch, Italienisch und habe Grundkenntnisse in Spanisch.

Gab es schon konkrete Anfragen?

Ja, es gab Anfragen, für die ich sehr dankbar bin. Bislang hat es aber noch nicht gepasst. Es war noch nichts dabei, bei dem ich sagen könnte: Das ist der nächste Schritt. Ich habe ganz klare Visionen und ambitionierte Ziele: Ich will eine attraktive Mannschaft in einer der Top-5-Ligen trainieren.

Haben Sie Ihren Vertrag in Hoffenheim, der noch bis 2025 lief, aufgelöst und sind frei für neue Klubs?

Ja, den haben wir mit meiner Freistellung im November aufgelöst. Ich wollte das Kapitel zügig abschließen.

Können Sie das erklären?

Ich bin sehr dankbar für die Zeit in Hoffenheim. Ich habe viele tolle, kompetente Menschen kennengelernt. Trotz eines unruhigen Umfelds haben wir eine geschlossene Mannschaft aufgebaut, uns für die Europa League qualifiziert und viele junge Talente entwickelt. Allerdings wurden im Juli plötzlich Alex Rosen (Sport-Geschäftsführer; d. Red.) und Basti Huber (Technischer Direktor) entlassen. Daraufhin kündigte auch Pirmin Schwegler (Direktor Profifußball). Man muss sich vorstellen: Der Klub ist innerhalb eines Tages von einem normalen in einen ungewöhnlichen, sehr chaotischen Zustand versetzt worden.

Wie haben Sie von der Entlassung erfahren?

Ich war gerade mit der Mannschaft im Trainingslager in Kitzbühel. Der Zeitpunkt und die Art und Weise haben uns alle sehr überrascht. Es war nichts vorbereitet.

Frank Kramer, der vorher Leiter der Nachwuchsabteilung war, hat dann interimsweise als Sportdirektor übernommen. Unter ihm hat der Klub in einem Monat 57 Mio. Euro ausgegeben – so viel wie noch nie zuvor in der Vereinsgeschichte. Wie viel Mitspracherecht hatten Sie bei den Transfers?

Frank hat sich sehr bemüht. Aber natürlich war das für ihn auch eine herausfordernde Situation. Er hat die Themen nicht allein entscheiden können, da waren auch andere Leute involviert.

Wie sind Sie mit der schwierigen Situation umgegangen?

Das war definitiv eine Herausforderung für mich als Trainer. Wir hatten sehr viele späte Transfers. Das ist grundsätzlich nicht gut. Vor allem, wenn man international spielt. Man hat dann wenig Zeit, die Mannschaft einzuspielen und wichtige Abläufe zu trainieren. Es bildet sich rechtzeitig keine richtige Führungsstruktur innerhalb des Teams. Es war nicht einfach. Ich habe meinen Fokus auf das gelenkt, was ich beeinflussen konnte: die Mannschaft, das Trainerteam und den Staff. Ich habe versucht, so ruhig und positiv wie möglich zu bleiben.

Warum haben Sie nicht hingeworfen?

In den ersten Tagen nach der Freistellung von Alex habe ich tatsächlich überlegt. Dann habe ich aber für mich entschieden, dass ich die Mannschaft nicht im Stich lassen werde. In dieser Phase war ich für meine Spieler die einzige Stabilität im Verein. Und außerdem wollte ich mit den Jungs Europa-League-Erfahrung sammeln. Das hatten wir uns in der Saison davor erarbeitet. Ich war überzeugt, dass wir es hinbekommen – trotz der ganzen Umstände.

Am zehnten Bundesliga-Spieltag hat Hoffenheim Sie entlassen. Viele waren überrascht, dass Sie so lange durchgehalten haben.

Nach der Freistellung von Alex Rosen war mir relativ zügig klar, dass es für mich keine Vertragsverlängerung geben wird. Trotz der schwierigen Situation waren wir in der Europa League gut dabei, konnten fünf Punkte aus vier Spielen holen. Wir sind auch im DFB-Pokal zwei Runden weitergekommen. Aber neun Punkte aus zehn Liga-Spielen waren zu wenig. Das war Grund genug für meine Freistellung. Die Kommunikation mit dem neuen Sport-Geschäftsführer Andi Schicker war dabei sehr professionell und transparent.

Ein Spieler wie Andrej hat extrem viel erlebt in seiner Karriere. Und er weiß auch, wie und wann er seinen Mund aufmacht. Und wenn er es macht, gibt es auch einen wichtigen Grund dafür.

Kurz nach dem Bosse-Beben Ende Juli 2024 wurde öffentlich, dass die USA Sie als Nationaltrainer auf dem Zettel hatten. Wie konkret war das Interesse?

Wir waren im Austausch und haben uns auch mehrmals getroffen. Alex Rosen war über alles informiert. Es hat aber grundsätzlich vom Zeitpunkt nicht gepasst. Mit Mauricio Pochettino haben sie eine sehr gute Wahl getroffen, und ich bin überzeugt, dass sie eine gute WM spielen werden.
