Perhaps the quarterback class from the last NFL Draft isn’t the highest in quality-there are quite a few of them-but there’s no doubt it’s one of the most talked-about in history. That’s largely thanks to the media attention surrounding Shedeur Sanders, who is currently in a fierce competition in Cleveland with the Browns.
If Cam Ward had entered the last Draft, there’s no way he would’ve been selected in the first round. He was projected to go between the third and fourth rounds of the 2024 Draft. That’s why he chose to return to play in the NCAA. After an impressive season at the University of Miami and due to the lack of strong competition, he ended up becoming the first overall pick in the NFL Draft.

Jaxson Dart was also selected in the first round, nearly at the end of the first day of the event. The New York Giants traded up to grab the Ole Miss quarterback, who will be learning from Russell Wilson before eventually taking over the team in the Big Apple. Meanwhile, we all know the story of Shedeur Sanders, who surprisingly fell all the way to the fifth round of the Draft.
CBS Projects When Rookie Quarterbacks Will Make Their First NFL Starts
In last season’s NFL, six rookie quarterbacks started at least one game. For the upcoming season, we’re likely to see similar numbers.
CBSSports.com analyzed the schedule for each team with rookie quarterbacks. In their projections, they excluded Jalen Milroe-taken by the Seattle Seahawks-because the team’s plan is to stick with Sam Darnold for the entire season.
Cam Ward: Titans vs. Broncos in Week 1. Despite Head Coach Brian Callahan saying there’s an open competition between Cam Ward and Will Levis, it will be hard for him to stick to that stance and not start his first-round pick from day one.
Jaxson Dart: Giants vs. 49ers in Week 9. The New York Giants’ schedule is very tough, and there are a few potential openings. Week 5 against the New Orleans Saints might be too early, but a game against San Francisco at the start of the second half of the season could be ideal-especially since it would be in New York. At some point, Wilson will have to hand over the reins to Dart.
Shedeur Sanders or Dillon Gabriel: Browns vs. Jets in Week 10. By that time, the Browns will be coming off a bye week. Projections suggest a big debate might emerge: give the reins to Dillon Gabriel, a third-round pick, or Shedeur Sanders, who was taken two rounds later. Or maybe, by then, one of them might no longer be with the team. It will definitely be interesting to watch what happens in Cleveland.
