It seems likely that at some point during the season, Shedeur Sanders will lead the Cleveland Browns’ offense – but at the start of the season, he reportedly has “almost zero chance” of becoming the team’s starting quarterback.
After the Browns opened the second day of their OTAs to the media, many reporters have written about Shedeur Sanders – and many agree that he has shown great potential. “When you watch him on the practice field, he’s a very gifted thrower,” said Zac Jackson of The Athletic. He later added, “Accuracy, timing, things like that. If he can put it all together, then I really believe he has a chance. But I don’t think we should jump to conclusions.”

But the big question – when can Sanders start? – has not been answered, and it may only be answered by Cleveland’s head coach, Kevin Stefanski.

The Browns may opt for a safer route at the start of the upcoming NFL season, assigning the QB1 job to 17-year NFL veteran Joe Flacco or Kenny Pickett, while leaving both rookies – Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders – on the bench.
Zac Jackson spoke about the chances of the rookies earning the Browns’ starting quarterback role:
“He has almost zero chance to win the job in September. And that’s what we’re talking about right now. He’s going to get the fewest reps and start last in line. Neither of the rookies have any chance to win this job,” Jackson said. “This is Joe Flacco’s or Kenny Pickett’s job, barring something. Now, this is the Cleveland Browns – so anything is in play.”
“It is a four-way quarterback competition, but there is a smaller than 4% chance that either rookie could realistically be the starter in September when they play the Bengals,” he concluded.
