Boateng im Interview mit „Sport1“: „Thomas Tuchel, den ich ja auch persönlich kennenlernen und unter ihm trainieren durfte, sehe ich aber nicht so kritisch wie andere. Jeder Trainer ist anders.“
[–>Und: „Ich hatte circa eine Woche mittrainiert und der Trainer sagte mir, dass ich ihn überzeugt habe. Er hätte mich gerne in den Kader übernommen. Der Verein hatte mir das in den Tagen davor auch so vermittelt – schließlich hatte ich in den Fitnesstests gut abgeschnitten. Man konnte also nachvollziehen, dass ich fit genug war.“
Rückblick: Nach zehn Jahren beim FC Bayern verlässt Boateng die Münchner 2021. Zwei Jahre spielt er dann für den Frankreich-Klub Olympique Lyon, im Oktober 2023 trainiert er unter Thomas Tuchel wieder bei den Bayern mit. Der Weltmeister von 2014 war zu dieser Zeit vertragslos, durfte sich auf dem Trainingsgelände fit halten. Das sorgte bei vielen Fans für Kritik.
Denn: Damals hatte er noch Prozess-Ärger wegen Körperverletzung und Beleidigung gegenüber seiner Ex-Freundin hat.
Boateng: „Damals hatte Bayern viele Verletzte. Die waren in ihrer Genesung dann aber weiter als gedacht. Bei mir kamen mein Privatleben und der Prozess vor Gericht dazu – das hat sicherlich auch eine Rolle gespielt. So ist das Leben. Es hat nicht geklappt. Das ist kein Beinbruch, aber es war natürlich schade. Es wäre schön gewesen, noch mal an die alte Arbeitsstelle zurückzukehren.“

Im Februar 2024 unterschrieb Boateng einen Vertrag in Italien bei US Salernitana, im vergangenen Sommer wechselte er nach Österreich zum LASK. Der ehemalige Nationalspieler (76 Länderspiele) über seinen aktuellen Verein: „Wir arbeiten hier wie bei einem großen Klub. Es gibt nichts, was ich hier nicht vorfinde. Die Trainingsplätze sind top, wir Spieler haben hier im Stadion Tageszimmer und vieles mehr. Es ist alles da, damit man gut arbeiten und weiter nach oben kommen kann.“
