Before the Super Bowls, before the MVP trophies, before the half-a-billion-dollar contract, Patrick Mahomes was just a teenage athlete with a golden arm-and a lot of choices. NFL or MLB? Texas Tech or the draft? For his mom, Randi Mahomes, it was like being thrown into a game with no playbook.

“I had no idea what I was doing,”she admits now. “I was just trying to keep up.”

While recruiters circled her son, Randi was working two jobs and doing laundry late into the night, trying to stay involved in a process that seemed designed to leave parents behind. “They were going straight to him. He was 16, 17-and I felt like I was still catching up, trying to guide him while letting him make his own decisions.”

That experience-stressful, isolating, and overwhelming-is what ultimately inspired her newest venture: the Sports Parent Academy, a program she recently launched to help other parents navigate the pressure-cooker world of youth sports.

“You Don’t Have to Scream From the Stands to Show Up”

During a recent Instagram Q&A, Randi was asked for her best advice to single moms. Her response was simple: “Be present. That’s it. You don’t need to be the loudest mom in the stands or wear all the team gear. Just show up. Let them know you’re there.”

It’s a perspective shaped by experience-one that’s more focused on connection than competition. “There were moments I felt like I was failing,” she said. “But Patrick always knew I had his back.”

And clearly, something worked. Today, Mahomes is not only the face of the NFL but also widely praised for his grounded attitude-something Randi takes quiet pride in.

With her new platform, she’s turning that hard-earned wisdom into something bigger. “I just want to give parents a little more knowledge than I had,” she said. “Because the truth is, we’re all just trying to do our best with what we’ve got.”
