Na atual edição, o país vizinho possui quatro representantes vivos no pleito: Estudiantes, River Plate, Racing e Vélez Sarsfield. Todos foram líderes em seus respectivos grupos.

Jhoan Duran’s revised 4-seam fastball key to his resurgence, reliever of the month award

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Many factors are involved in the early-season resurgence that led Jhoan Duran to earn reliever of the month honors Tuesday, but it’s hard to dismiss the impact of a revamped four-seamer.Though the dip in average velocity of Duran’s fastball over the years is well documented, the Minnesota Twins reliever is using a new grip to throw his heater as much as ever and with better results than in any of his big-league seasons aside from his rookie year (2022).AdvertisementDuran, who became the first Twins reliever to be named the American League’s reliever of the month since Joe Nathan in June 2009, is 4-1 with nine saves, a 0.99 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 27 1/3 innings this season. He posted a 0.60 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 15 innings in May en route to joining Nathan, […]

Alex Cora takes ownership after another Red Sox loss: ‘At one point, it has to be on me’

BOSTON — Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora usually keeps the same steady tone after wins and after losses. To him, it’s necessary throughout a long season not to read too much into one game. Not Tuesday. After the team’s major-league leading 17th one-run loss this season, a 4-3 defeat to the Los Angeles Angels in 10 innings, Cora didn’t hold back his frustration.Advertisement“We keep making the same mistakes, we’re not getting better,” Cora said. “At one point, it has to be on me, I guess, right? I’m the manager. I got to keep pushing them to get better. They’re not getting better. They’re not. We keep making the same mistakes.“I’m being very honest about it. Very open about it,” he continued. “You get frustrated, but at one point it’s like, ‘OK, what are we going to do? What’s going to change?’ […]

Mamardashvili v Alisson: Could there really be a battle to be Liverpool’s No 1?

It’s rare that such an outpouring of emotion should follow the exit of a backup goalkeeper. The understudy stopper is often a forlorn figure, a guy simply there to make up the numbers and occasionally cover in times of need.Yet over the years, Caoimhin Kelleher has become much more than a bit-part player at Liverpool, which is why news of his £18million ($24.3m) move to Brentford yesterday has been met with an equal degree of sadness and celebration.AdvertisementThis was a man, signed from Cork-based Ringmahon Rangers in 2015, who steadily became Ireland’s standout goalkeeper and was clearly good enough to be an established No 1. He filled in admirably whenever Alisson was absent and earned the undisputed tag of the best backup goalkeeper in the Premier League. If it wasn’t for the continued brilliance of the Brazilian, then Kelleher’s journey at Liverpool […]

Timing’s just right for Yankees as Jazz Chisholm and Devin Williams return to familiar roles

NEW YORK – Jazz Chisholm Jr. knows how to make an entrance. When he joined the Yankees in a trade last July, he homered four times in his first four games, all victories. He opened this season with three homers in a three-game sweep. He had high hopes for Tuesday, his first game back from an oblique strain.Advertisement“Honestly, I pictured a 3-for-3,” Chisholm said after a do-it-all performance to beat the Cleveland Guardians. “But I’ll take a 2-for-3.”Chisholm used his speed, power and defense in a 3-2 win at Yankee Stadium behind seven dominant innings from Carlos Rodón.Back at third base for the first time since the World Series, Chisholm ranged across the line for a backhanded stab in the third, firing on a hop to first baseman Paul Goldschmidt for the out. He singled in the fifth and scored […]

Didier Deschamps on the brilliance of Doue and Yamal – and why he can’t ‘copy and paste’ PSG’s success

Didier Deschamps had a hard enough job as it was fitting all the extravagantly gifted attacking players at his disposal into France’s starting XI. Then Desire Doue came along.During the most recent international break, in March, Deschamps found himself grappling with the three-sided conundrum of how to grant his captain, Kylian Mbappe, the attacking freedom he desires, how to somehow harness Ousmane Dembele’s remarkable form as a false nine with Paris Saint-Germain, and how to devise a system that would enable Michael Olise to fully express himself in a France shirt for the first time.AdvertisementThe two legs of France’s Nations League quarter-final win over Croatia yielded only partial success on those fronts. The deployment of Dembele in a free central role in the first leg, a 2-0 defeat in Split, proved underwhelming, while Mbappe extended his run of international appearances […]
