Kurz nachdem er seinen Dreijahresvertrag bei Werder Bremen unterschrieben und der Verein seine Verpflichtung bekannt gegeben hatte, bekam Horst Steffen (56) eine besondere Glückwunsch-SMS. Absender: Friedhelm Funkel (71). „Ich habe Horst gratuliert und schrieb, dass Werder ein Top-Verein für ihn ist, dass ich mich für ihn freue und dass er es verdient hat, nun endlich in der 1. Liga zu sein“, verrät Funkel. „Aus meiner Sicht passen beide zusammen wie die Faust aufs Auge.“
Unter Trainer-Legende Funkel spielte Steffen knapp sieben Jahre, erst in Uerdingen, dann in Duisburg. Von ihm schaute er sich einiges ab, unter anderem, was den Umgang mit einer Mannschaft betrifft.

„Zu Horsts Stärken gehören neben den trainerspezifischen Dingen seine Menschlichkeit und Empathie“, sagt Werder-Manager Clemens Fritz (44).
Am Montag wurde der bisherige Elversberg-Coach, der den Dorfklub aus der 4. Liga fast bis in die Bundesliga geführt hatte, als Nachfolger von Ole Werner (37) vorgestellt. Der musste Werder trotz eines bis 2026 laufenden Vertrags verlassen. Aus mehreren Gründen.
► Werner forderte in den vergangenen Monaten immer wieder Verstärkungen – ohne sich zu Werder zu bekennen. Ein Alarm-Signal für Fritz, der daraufhin mit seinem Team den Trainermarkt scoutete.
► Bremen sah in Werner eine Lame Duck: Ein Trainer, der nicht verlängern will, hätte alle Planungen gebremst. Wie soll man so Spieler für die Zukunft begeistern?
► Zudem wurde Werner vorgeworfen, den Nachwuchs zu wenig gefördert zu haben. Stellvertretend ist das Beispiel Nick Woltemade (23). Der flüchtete 2024 ablösefrei nach Stuttgart, wurde dort Pokalsieger und Nationalspieler. Genau solche Entwicklungen soll jetzt Steffen möglich machen.
[–>Nach einem vierstündigen Treffen im Mai waren die Werder-Bosse von ihm endgültig überzeugt. Steffen verzichtete damals auf eine spezielle Power-Point-Präsentation – er schilderte in dem Gespräch klar, wie er Bremen nach vorne bringen will: mit attraktivem Fußball.
Steffen beschreibt ihn wie folgt: „Im Vordergrund unseres Spiels stehen Spielfreude, Einsatzbereitschaft und Intensität. Wir werden unsere Abläufe haben. Aber in diesen Abläufen wird auch Kreativität ihren Platz haben. Die Lust und Laune am Fußball sollen dann auch auf die Tribünen übergehen. In den vergangenen Jahren ist es sehr oft gelungen, dass ich Freude hatte, dem Spiel zuzuschauen. Das soll wiederkommen.“
Zwar hat Werder, das letztmals 2010 international spielte, grundsätzlich die schnelle Rückkehr nach Europa im Visier. Doch der Maßstab an Steffen, der bis zu 350 000 Euro Ablöse kostet, ist ein anderer. Er bekommt Zeit, eine Mannschaft zu entwickeln, die dann nachhaltig erfolgreich ist – und er soll Transferwerte schaffen, die der Verein aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen braucht.
Und was ist speziell an Steffen? „Er hat eine besondere Art, ich habe noch nie einen Trainer gehabt, der so ruhig ist“, sagt Fisnik Asllani (22), der unter Steffen zum besten Scorer der 2. Bundesliga in der abgelaufenen Saison reifte.
Eine ruhige Saison – die haben sie am liebsten in Bremen.
