The Steelers made a big splash on June 7, bringing in veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers in hopes of making a deep postseason run. But not everyone’s buying the hype.
Former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum, now an analyst for ESPN, took a flamethrower to the move during Wednesday’s Get Up. He didn’t just question the signing-he outright predicted it would fail.
Rodgers flaunts new asset in NFL return
“I think Aaron Rodgers is going to be irrelevant by Thanksgiving,”Tannenbaum said, claiming Pittsburgh will finish behind both Cincinnati and Baltimore in the AFC North.
That’s a bold forecast for a team that hasn’t posted a losing season since before TikTok existed. And while Rodgers may not be at his MVP peak, he’s still more than capable of slinging it. Last season in New York, he threw for nearly 3,900 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Not elite, but far from irrelevant.
Rodgers Out by Midseason? ESPN Analyst Thinks It’s on the Table
Tannenbaum didn’t stop at doubting Rodgers’ effectiveness. He floated the idea that Pittsburgh could bench him for sixth-round rookie Will Howard if things go south quickly.
That’s a stretch, say most analysts. NFL Network’s Kyle Brandt called it “a bit dramatic” on Good Morning Football. And Rodgers’ track record, even post-injury and with a shaky Jets O-line, suggests he’s still got gas in the tank.
But Tannenbaum’s criticism might not be entirely about performance. He spent seven years running the Jets and was reportedly involved in their front office restructuring this offseason. If Rodgers thrives in Pittsburgh while the Jets stumble with Justin Fields, it’s not just the Steelers who’ll be facing scrutiny.
So is this analysis or a little self-preservation?
Rodgers, for his part, has stayed quiet and focused since arriving in Pittsburgh. He’s got a solid defense, a strong coaching staff, and a shot at proving the doubters wrong-again.
But if the offense sputters and the AFC North gets crowded, those hot takes from Get Up might start to look a little less crazy.

Alex Bregman to opt out of Red Sox deal, enter MLB free agency, per report
Getty Images Veteran infielder Alex Bregman will be opting out of his contract the Boston Red Sox and becoming a free agent this coming offseason, the New York Post reports. Bregman, 31, is coming off a highly productive 2025 season for Boston in which he slashed .273/.360/.462 (128 OPS+) with 18 home runs and 28 doubles. Although he was limited to 114 games played because of a serious quad strain, Bregman still managed a WAR of 3.5 for the season. He earned his third career All-Star selection. For his career, Bregman boasts an OPS+ of 132 and a WAR of 43.1 across parts of 10 MLB seasons.
