Montero lidera el torbellino del Valencia Basket, que se queda a un paso de la final

El torbellino del Valencia Basket, fiero en defensa, confiado en ataque y de nuevo comandado por el dominicano Jean Montero, desmontó este jueves a un dubitativo La Laguna Tenerife, que regresa a casa con un 2-0 en las semifinales de la Liga Endesa y obligado a ganar tres partidos seguidos para estar en la final.

El guión del encuentro tuvo cierta semejanza con el del martes. Arrancó por delante el equipo canario pero el Valencia ni se inmutó, ejecutó firme su plan de partido y cuando a los pocos minutos se puso por delante ya no hubo forma de que el Tenerife le parara. El conjunto ‘taronja’ que nunca había ganado los dos primeros partidos de una semifinal, acaricia ya la final y refuerza su candidatura.

No hubo variación en el quinteto inicial del Valencia Basket pero sí en el del Canarias. En su partido 700 en un banquillo de la acb, Txus Vidorreta apostó como novedades por Scrubb en la línea exterior en un lugar de un David Kramer que se quedó fuera del partido y por Yannis Morin por dentro en el lugar de Gio Shermadini.

Le salió bien porque cinco puntos de Thomas Scrubb le dieron la iniciativa al Tenerife. Además, desde el principio, el vasco trató de jugar con la ansiedad del Valencia planteando defensas alternativas. Le costó casi cuatro minutos a los locales anotar y fue Montero quien despejó el horizonte con otros cinco puntos seguidos. Pero desde ahí ya no paró de hacerlo.

Sequía visitante y parcial de 15-0

El equilibrio lo rompió la rotación, que lo desniveló del lado local. Matt Costello, Xabi López Arostegui y De Larrea completaron un parcial de 15-0 que dinamitó el guion. Un tiempo muerto de Vidorreta no cambió el panorama. Casi siete minutos se comió el equipo visitante sin anotar, víctima de la defensa agresiva local pero también de sus propios errores en el tiro. El ejemplo: los dos tiros libres fallados de Jaime Fernández. Casi todas las muñecas estaban agarrotadas.

Bruno Fitipaldo fue casi el único que no tuvo miedo. El uruguayo trató de aguantar a los suyos pero el Valencia había cogido confianza y cerró el primer cuarto con un 23-5 que noqueó a los isleños. Siguió Vidorreta a la búsqueda de soluciones y apostó por un quinteto de pequeños, con Aaron Doornekamp y Abromaitis como ‘grandes’ para mejorar su zona 2-3.

Mejoró el equipo aurinegro y cuatro triples de Fitipaldo le permitieron sacar algo de partido pero Pedro Martínez reaccionó rápido y devolvió a la pista a Nate Sestina, que con un par de triples contuvo la reacción. La inesperada aparición del dominicano Joel Soriano en el juego interior local, volvió a mandar a la lona a los visitantes (40-24, m.16).

Lluis Costa, otro actor secundario, se echó al Tenerife a la espalda con diez puntos casi seguidos pero el descaro del catalán tuvo poco premio. Un triple de De Larrea cortó su mejor momento y uno más, casi inverosímil, de Montero sobre la bocina del descanso permitió a los locales irse al vestuario con su máxima renta (55-35, m.20).

Los triples acaban sentenciando

Arrancó el Tenerife con dos triples, uno de Fitipaldo y otro de Marcelinho Huertas, que como Shermadini no había anotado en la primera parte. Parecía que había esperanza para los visitantes pero dos triples de Matt Costello, otro de Sestina y uno de Montero, le mandaron de nuevo a la lona (71-46, m. 26).

De nuevo apareció Costa, esta vez con la ayuda de Morin, para maquillar su desventaja. Llegó a bajar a 16 y a tener balón, pero otra canasta de Montero sobre la bocina del cuarto dio otro mazazo a los visitantes cuando apenas se había puesto en pie.

Enfadado por el bajón de los suyos, Pedro Martínez les llamó al orden y entre Chris Jones y Jaime Pradilla devolvieron al carril al torbellino ‘taronja’ y el Valencia ya no frenó, pasó de nuevo de los 100 puntos e igualó de nuevo su récord de triples en playoff al llegar a los 16.
