The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to activate Emmet Sheehan this week, league sources told The Athletic, hoping to plug some of their rotation need as the 25-year-old makes his official return from Tommy John surgery.
Sheehan had been among the headliners of the Dodgers’ wave of pitching talent in 2023, debuting after getting called up without making a single appearance in Triple A and making 13 big-league appearances. His fastball has long been considered a unique weapon, enough for Sheehan to make the club’s postseason roster that October. Thirteen months removed from surgery, he’s been clocked at around 97 mph with his fastball.

Now, Sheehan is entering dire circumstances. His injury a year ago was among the first in a cascade of pitching injuries for the 2024 Dodgers, who managed to win the World Series despite fielding just three healthy starting pitchers on their roster. Those injury woes have continued into 2025; the club has already had 20 injured list placements and currently has 14 pitchers, including Sheehan, on the shelf.
The Dodgers’ rotation has pitched the second-fewest innings in the majors this season, beating only the Miami Marlins with 325 2/3 frames. Those innings haven’t been overly productive, either, ranking 22nd in baseball with a 4.37 ERA. That at least played part of a role in activating Sheehan now, when he hasn’t topped more than 3 1/3 innings in any of his minor-league rehab outings.
“When you talk about what our need might be at the time, if he’s the best (option) and health isn’t compromised, it’s a conversation,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said last month when Sheehan’s rehab was transferred to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Friday, Roberts suggested the Dodgers were talking through options, including activating Sheehan. The team is at the start of a stretch of 10 games in a row, meaning Sheehan could slot in at some point this week after last appearing in a game Thursday.
