Deutscher NBA-Profi vor dem Titel – Das lernte Hartenstein von den Stars

Zu Beginn seiner NBA-Karriere war der Stammplatz von Isaiah Hartenstein (27) die Bank. Als er 2018 bei den Houston Rockets in der stärksten Basketball-Liga der Welt loslegte, bekam er kaum Spielzeit. Doch der Deutsche verstand früh: von den Besten lernen, heißt siegen lernen. So hörte und schaute er im Training genau hin, um besser zu werden.

Einer seiner ersten Lehrer war der Meister-Center von Dirk Nowitzki (46): Tyson Chandler (42) gewann mit dem Würzburger 2011 den NBA-Titel. 2019 war er dann kurz vor dem Ruhestand in Houston Teamkollege von Hartenstein. „Chandler zeigte mir, dass ich in der Defensive lauter sein muss, mit den anderen reden soll“, erzählt er. „Das war ihm besonders wichtig, er wies mich in Spielen und in jedem Training immer wieder darauf hin.“

Jetzt gehört Hartenstein, der bis 2016 in Quakenbrück spielte, bei Oklahoma City zu den Dirigenten der meisterhaften Verteidigung. Er ist ständig in Bewegung, wechselt von Gegenspieler zu Gegenspieler und ist die letzte Verteidigungslinie am Korb. Auch dank des Deutschen hat die Mannschaft eine der besten Defensiv-Formationen der gesamten NBA – auch in der Finalserie gegen die Indiana Pacers. „Wir haben keine Schwachstellen, die unsere Gegner jagen und ausnutzen könnten“, sagt Hartenstein. „Ich passe mich dem an, was die Mannschaft braucht.“

[–>In der Offensive guckte er sich ebenfalls viel von den Größten der NBA ab. 2020/21 spielte er mit Superstar Nikola Jokic (30), dreimaliger MVP (wertvollster Spieler), bei den Denver Nuggets. „Jokic half mir sehr, mein Passspiel zu verbessern“, sagt Hartenstein. „Er zeigte mir, wie man Mitspieler freispielt, nur indem man die Gegner durch einen Blick in die andere Richtung austrickst. Durch ihn verstand ich, welche Mitspieler frei sind, obwohl es gar nicht danach aussieht.“ Hartenstein gab diese Saison im Schnitt 3,8 Vorlagen pro Partie – Top 5 unter den Center-Spielern in der gesamten Liga.

Hartenstein weiß, dass er nie ein Star sein wird. Daher vertiefte er sich in die Drecksarbeit: „Zu Beginn meiner Karriere ging es für mich darum, meine Rolle in der NBA zu finden. Viele Spieler versuchen, gleich Superstars zu sein, schauen nur auf ihre eigenen Punkte. Bei mir ging es darum, wie ich Einsatzzeit bekomme und wie ich meiner Mannschaft helfen kann zu gewinnen.“

Ein wichtiger Faktor: das Freiblocken der Laufwege für seine Mitspieler wie Thunder-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (26). Der auch dank Hartenstein mit 32,7 Punkten pro Spiel der beste Korbjäger der NBA ist. Als Vorbild nahm sich der Deutsche den viermaligen Meister Draymond Green (35) von den Golden State Warriors. „Um dort besser zu werden, habe ich viel Video-Studium von Green gemacht“, sagt Hartenstein. „Wie hat er für Spieler wie Stephen Curry den Weg freigeräumt? Jetzt weiß ich, wie ich den Stars das Leben leichter mache. Da mache ich einzigartige Arbeit in der NBA.“

Nach der Verpflichtung von Hartenstein im vergangenen Sommer (drei Jahre, 76 Mio. Euro) ist Oklahoma City auf ein höheres Level gekommen. „Durch Alex Caruso und mich wurde das Team noch einmal aufgewertet“, sagt der Center. „Wir brachten Erfahrung rein, Körperlichkeit, Rebounding.“

Für Hartenstein war es ein weiterer Schritt in einer Karriere als Selfmade-Man – vom Bankdrücker zum Top-Center: „Ich habe konstant immer wieder bewiesen, dass ich in die NBA gehöre. Immer, wenn ich eine Chance bekommen habe, dann habe ich sie genutzt. Und jetzt bei Oklahoma City wieder gezeigt, dass ich einer der besten ,Bigs‘ (Center; d. Red.) der Liga bin.“
