Stephen A. Smith looked completely unfazed, even amused after being caught doing something unexpected during the NBA Finals. A curious fan, seated several rows away, decided to zoom in all the way with their phone to capture what the ESPN star was doing on his device. What they found wasn’t game footage or stats, it was something much more surprising.
The now viral clip shows Stephen A. calmly tapping away at his phone during a break in the action. A fan with an eagle eye, and a seriously long zoom, managed to capture a close up of his screen from several rows away. What they saw sparked a wave of speculation online. Was he checking stats? Responding to a hot take? Or doing something completely unrelated to the game? Let’s just say… it wasn’t what anyone expected.
Unbothered by viral phone moment
Rather than dodge the moment, Stephen A. embraced it. “I’ve got no regrets,” he said unapologetically, adding that he always takes a moment to unwind during game pauses. “I always do this,” he explained, doubling down in pure Stephen A. fashion. “I’m still watching the game, but you don’t need to stare at it for every single second.”
He pointed out that with his nonstop schedule covering games, appearing on shows, traveling, and constantly breaking down every sports storyline imaginable a few moments of mental downtime are necessary. And for him, solitaire is the go to.
What could have sparked criticism instead turned into a classic Stephen A. moment: blunt, self-assured, and utterly relatable. Even in an arena full of stars, he showed that sometimes, you just need a quiet minute, and he’s not about to apologize for it.
