At the Cleveland Browns’ training camp, the most publicized quarterback battle in NFL history is taking place. That may sound exaggerated, but the camp led by Kevin Stefanski is completely polarized – especially because one of the contenders is the high-profile Shedeur Sanders.
Shedeur Sanders stops practice to make a TikTok after a kid’s request
Shedeur Sanders is a player who has impressed both in the NCAA and now in the NFL, largely because of how polarizing he has become. Much of that attention comes from the fact that his father is NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. But his two years at the University of Colorado were also quite impressive.
In his final year, Sanders threw 37 touchdown passes and was expected to be a first-round pick. However, against all odds, he fell all the way to the fifth round, where he was selected at pick 144 by the Cleveland Browns.
Joe Flacco has a big edge over the rest
What everyone wants to hear or read is that Shedeur Sanders will become the starter. However, that will have to wait. Being drafted in the fifth round will come at a cost – ahead of him are Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, who was taken in the third round of the recent draft.
The one who has the edge, especially due to his dominance in the passing game, is the veteran Joe Flacco, who is heading into his 18th NFL season. NFL insider Tony Grossi shared his perspective on why Flacco is ahead of Pickett, Gabriel, and Sanders.
“To claim the starting job over Flacco, (the other QBs are) going to have to learn how to run the play-action passing game,” said Tony Grossi.
Let’s not forget that Joe Flacco played the final five games of the 2023 season with the Cleveland Browns and ended up performing spectacularly. He won four games and lost one. His numbers were impressive: 1,616 passing yards (an average of 323.2 yards per game), 13 touchdown passes, and he led the team to the playoffs.
So, at least for the start of the season, Joe Flacco will be under center for the Cleveland Browns. But the pressure will be entirely on him – with any mistake, calls for his job will grow louder, and fans will expect Kevin Stefanski to give Shedeur Sanders a chance.
