Caitlin Clark often steals the spotlight for the Indiana Fever. The second-year guard commands headlines with her dazzling performances and seemingly impossible three-pointers. But none of that would be possible without the teammates who support her-starting with four-year veteran Lexie Hull.
Clark’s arrival transformed the Fever from a team that earned the No. 1 overall pick two years in a row into a serious championship contender. Averaging 19.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 8.5 assists per game, the University of Iowa product is the team’s undisputed leader.
But Clark’s offensive brilliance wouldn’t shine nearly as brightly without a defensive anchor-someone who protects the rim and chips in points when needed. That player is Hull, and Clark recently gave her long-overdue praise.
Lexie Hull: Indiana’s defensive secret weapon
In a press conference before the Fever’s 88-77 loss to the Golden State Valkyries, Clark said, “The game is different when Lexie is on the floor. Her energy, her tenacity, the way she affects the game-whether she’s scoring or not-she’s our best defensive player. I think she’s one of the best defensive players in the league.”
Clark didn’t stop there. “She’s active, she’s aggressive, and she also shoots the ball really well. She’s made a lot of threes for us. She’s shooting close to 60%, which is really unheard of in all of basketball-you just don’t see that.”
She’s not exaggerating. Since being drafted sixth overall in 2022, Hull has raised her game significantly: jumping from 5.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game in 2024 to 9.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.8 assists this season. It’s no wonder Clark thinks she deserves serious accolades.
The race for Most Improved Player heats up
“I’m just really proud of her. She always puts her head down and keeps working,” Clark said. “In my eyes, she’s probably the top player in this league for Most Improved. I think she’s improved in almost every statistical category. I’m really happy for her-and lucky to have a teammate like her.”
After their loss to the Valkyries, the Fever must regroup for a demanding stretch: back-to-back road games against the Aces and the Storm, followed by a home matchup with the Sparks and a visit to the Wings. Can Clark and Hull rally the squad for a deep playoff run? We’re about to find out.
