The Miami Dolphins are in the midst of a rebuild. After finishing the 2024 NFL season ranked 14th in pass defense, the team decided to offload certain veteran assets to make room for new talent. But not everything has gone according to plan-as star cornerback Jalen Ramsey knows all too well.
Despite a solid season that included 60 tackles (39 solo), one sack, two interceptions, and 11 passes defensed, Ramsey and the Dolphins mutually agreed early in the offseason to seek a trade. Three months later, however, he’s still on Miami’s roster-and no team has pulled the trigger.
That might soon change.
Could Ramsey be headed to New Orleans?
Athlon Sports analyst Douglas Santo recently floated a trade idea that would send the 10-year veteran to a franchise looking for a fresh start: the New Orleans Saints. After a 5-12 finish in 2024, the Saints are aiming to return to playoff relevance.
“The Saints don’t have the biggest need at the position,” Santo admitted. “But have the cap space for Ramsey,” and he could mentor rising stars like Kool-Aid McKinstry and Alontae Taylor, while complementing veteran Isaac Yiadom.
The move would also stabilize the Saints’ secondary-already anchored by safeties Tyrann Mathieu and Justin Reid-and allow their young cornerbacks time to develop.
Crunching the numbers
Ramsey is currently under a three-year, $72.3 million contract with the Dolphins. In 2025 alone, he’s due $1.26 million in base salary, along with a $4 million roster bonus and an $18.9 million signing bonus-totaling a $16.7 million cap hit for Miami.
According to Santo, the Saints have roughly $29 million in cap space, leaving plenty of room to absorb Ramsey’s contract and maintain financial flexibility. It’s a bold but feasible proposal-now it’s just a matter of whether the teams are willing to make it happen.
