In ihrem Statement erklärt die Premier League: „Die Vorschriften zu Anstößen und Wiederanstößen sollen sicherstellen, dass der Wettbewerb auf höchstmöglichem professionellem Niveau organisiert wird und allen Fans sowie den teilnehmenden Klubs Verlässlichkeit bietet. Zudem gewährleisten sie, dass die Übertragungen jeder Premier-League-Partie im vorgesehenen Zeitplan bleiben.“
Laut der Premier League hat City die Strafe angenommen und eine Entschuldigung ausgesprochen. Die Einsicht hält sich aber in Grenzen. Bereits vergangene Saison zahlte City wegen 22 Verspätungen über zwei Millionen Pfund (ca. 2,3 Millionen Euro).
