O Brasil não está sozinho na corrida para sediar a próxima edição da Copa do Mundo de Clubes, prevista para 2029. Durante a Cúpula Executiva de Futebol da Fifa, realizada nesta semana em Miami, tanto Samir Xaud, presidente da CBF, quanto Rafael Louzán, presidente da Federação Espanhola de Futebol, comunicaram a Gianni Infantino o desejo de receber o torneio. Segundo os relatos, ambos os pedidos foram bem recebidos pelo presidente da Fifa.

No caso brasileiro, a solicitação se apoia no sucesso da atual edição, disputada no país, com estádios cheios, transmissões em alta audiência e boa avaliação da organização. Já a candidatura espanhola se ampara no crescimento do interesse do público local — os jogos do torneio vêm registrando aumento expressivo na audiência da TV.
Apesar disso, a proposta da Espanha enfrenta um obstáculo interno: o presidente da La Liga, Javier Tebas, é um crítico ferrenho da competição. Embora não tenha ingerência direta na candidatura — conduzida pela federação, e não pela liga — Tebas tem feito declarações públicas contra o torneio.
— Meu objetivo é garantir que não haja mais Copa do Mundo de Clubes, isso está muito claro para mim. Não vi nenhum jogo. Bom, assisti um pouco do Chelsea ontem e pareceu um amistoso de verão. Não vi nenhuma intensidade, só uma correria, pelo menos durante os 25 minutos que assisti… — disse Tebas, nesta semana.
Apesar de a edição de 2025 ser tratada como evento-teste para a Copa do Mundo do ano seguinte — que terá Estados Unidos, Canadá e México como sedes —, a Fifa não considera obrigatório que a edição de 2029 aconteça em um dos países que vão receber o Mundial de seleções em 2030. O Marrocos, uma das sedes da Copa de 2030, já havia manifestado o desejo de sediar o torneio de clubes sozinho, mas recentemente o presidente da federação marroquina, Fouzi Lekjaa, afirmou que os três países (Marrocos, Espanha e Portugal) poderiam receber o evento, em preparação para a competição de seleções. Agora, a Espanha quer sediar sozinha, como os EUA fazem neste ano.
Mattias Grafström, secretário-geral da Fifa, no entanto, não esconde que o torneio pode acontecer em qualquer lugar, tendo citado recentemente até a América do Sul como possível destino. Segundo o The Athletic, até mesmo uma segunda edição nos Estados Unidos é cogitada, numa jogada comercial para manter os patrocinadores do país.
Outro país que já se manifestou sobre o torneio foi a Austrália. Após o sucesso da Copa do Mundo Feminina de 2023, a federação local anunciou que o país se candidataria para receber tanto a Copa Asiática Feminina da AFC de 2026 (já confirmada) quanto a Copa do Mundo de Clubes da Fifa de 2029. Nada foi oficializado até o momento, no entanto. Nem mesmo a Fifa divulgou nada sobre como a escolha será feita.
Apesar da ideia inicial de expansão para 48 clubes, a segunda edição da Copa do Mundo de Clubes da Fifa está planejada para junho e julho de 2029, com 32 times. Caso o Brasil seja o país-sede, terá uma vaga extra, provavelmente destinada ao campeão brasileiro de 2028. Os quatro campeões da Libertadores entre 2025 e 2028 também estarão classificados, além de duas vagas via ranking específico do torneio da Conmebol.
Atualmente, já têm vaga garantida na segunda edição: o Al-Ahli-ASA, campeão da Liga dos Campeões da Ásia; o Pyramis-EGI, vencedor do torneio continental da África; o Cruz Azul-MEX, campeão da Concachampions deste ano; e o PSG, campeão europeu.
