Watch out, WNBA–Caitlin Clark just made a personal change that could shake up the rest of the season. After a lackluster performance against the Golden State Valkyries, the Indiana Fever star is turning to a familiar source of confidence: her custom sneakers, affectionately known as “The Bellas.”
June 19’s matchup against the Valkyries was a rough outing for Clark and her team. In just her third game back from a quadriceps injury, she didn’t look like herself-posting 11 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds on 3-for-14 shooting, with six turnovers in an 88-77 loss.
Clark acknowledged her off night but kept things in perspective. “I’m not going to play perfect for 44 games,” she said. “I didn’t play very well at Golden State, and to me, I wasn’t defeated after the game.” Now, her old lucky charm might be just what she needs to bounce back.
A footwear swap that fans noticed
Before the pivotal game against the Las Vegas Aces, footage from Fever practice began circulating online-and fans noticed something right away: Clark had ditched the sneakers she wore during Thursday’s loss for her beloved Nike Kobe 6 Protros.
Nicknamed “The Bellas” by fans, the customized kicks feature an image of Bella, the Clark family dog, on the insoles. Caitlin wore them in her first game back from injury, when Indiana stunned the defending champion New York Liberty 102-88.
While many athletes have a lucky ritual or item of clothing, it’s unclear whether Clark truly believes in superstition. Still, fans were quick to point out that she also wore The Bellas in the Fever’s 88-71 win over the Atlanta Dream just days later.
Fans are all-in on “The Bellas”
Social media lit up at the sight of the sneakers. “Bella is coming back for round 2,” read one viral Instagram comment.
Some fans went a step further, calling on Clark to retire her old shoes. “CC needs to retire the ones from San Francisco,” one fan wrote. Another declared, “I kind of think The Bellas are the official 22 lucky shoe.”
Whether or not she wears them against Las Vegas, one thing’s for sure-everyone will be watching to see if her magic kicks return to the hardwood.
