In a stunning move that has sent shockwaves through the NBA, the Phoenix Suns have traded superstar forward Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets.
The trade, confirmed on Sunday, is part of a multi-player, multi-asset deal that significantly alters the landscape of the Western Conference.
Durant, a 15-time All-Star and two-time NBA champion, will now suit up for his fifth NBA franchise. The 36-year-old forward averaged 26.6 points per game last season, shooting 57.2% from the field and 43% from beyond the arc, numbers that demonstrate he’s far from slowing down.
What each team gets in the deal
According to ESPN and multiple confirmed reports, the full trade details are as follows:
To Houston Rockets:
- Kevin Durant
To Phoenix Suns:
- Jalen Green – a dynamic young guard and former No. 2 overall pick
- Dillon Brooks – defensive wing and veteran presence
- 2025 No. 10 overall pick
- Five future second-round picks
The Suns‘ decision to move Durant comes after a disappointing 2024-25 campaign that saw them exit the playoffs early. Rather than doubling down on their veteran trio of Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, Phoenix has opted to reset its roster with young talent and future flexibility.
Rockets make their championship intentions clear
The Rockets, who have been gradually rebuilding under head coach Ime Udoka, now emerge as serious contenders in the West. With Durant joining a roster that includes rising star Alperen engün, defensive anchor Fred VanVleet, and playmaker Amen Thompson, Houston now boasts a strong mix of youth and experience.
Reports indicate that Durant had a say in his next destination, with Houston among his preferred landing spots. Other teams reportedly in the mix were Miami and San Antonio, but Houston ultimately offered the best combination of picks, players, and cap flexibility.
General Manager Rafael Stone has clearly decided the rebuild phase is over. “We’ve been positioning ourselves to make the leap, and Kevin gives us that opportunity,” one team source reportedly said.
Meanwhile, Phoenix gains a much-needed reprieve from the luxury tax and regains control of several future picks that had previously been moved during their aggressive run at title contention. With Green and Brooks added to the rotation-and potentially more youth coming via the No. 10 pick-the Suns now face a crossroads: build around Booker or go full youth movement.
