Nach einem hitzigen Moment mit einer Gegenspielerin war ihr Trikot mit der Nummer 8 binnen Stunden nahezu restlos ausverkauft. Fans rissen sich um das Shirt – das Fever-Merchandise ging durch die Decke. Selbst Insider waren überrascht vom plötzlichen Hype.
Cunningham hatte beim 88:71-Sieg gegen Connecticut Sun ihre Gegnerin Jacy Sheldon (24) hart gefoult und sich anschließend eine Rangelei mit ihr geliefert. Der Grund: Sheldon und ihre Kolleginnen hatten Indiana-Superstar Caitlin Clark (23) zuvor mehrfach attackiert. Für Cunningham ein Grund einzuschreiten.

Die Nachfrage nach ihrem Trikot war so groß, dass ihr Team kaum hinterherkam. Größen von M bis 2XL waren sofort vergriffen – selbst XS ging fast aus. Ein Sprecher der Fever gab offen zu: „Wir wussten, sie bringt Energie ins Team. Aber DAS hat niemand erwartet.“
Die 27-Jährige ist seit Februar neu bei Indiana, kam von den Phoenix Mercury. Bei ihrer Vorstellung sagte sie selbstbewusst: „Ich bin bissig, leidenschaftlich, frech. Ich stehe für mein Team ein – und für mich selbst.“ Genau das kommt bei den Fans an.

„Cunningham war in zahlreiche Vorfälle verwickelt, die nicht nur die Sicherheit anderer Spielerinnen gefährdeten, sondern auch den Ruf der WNBA als Liga, die stolz auf Integrität und Fairplay ist, beschädigten“, heißt es in der Petition, die allerdings noch nicht einmal 400 Unterschriften gesammelt hat.
