Karmelo Anthony, the Texas teenager accused of fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet, has been formally indicted on a charge of first-degree murder.
The indictment was issued by a Collin County grand jury following weeks of evidence presented by the local district attorney.
According to officials, the stabbing occurred during a meet at David Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, where both students were present under a tent used by Metcalf‘s school team.
Police say the altercation began when Metcalf asked Anthony to leave the tent, since he did not attend the same school.
Shortly after the incident, Anthony was arrested and charged. He has been under house arrest since being released on reduced bond in April.
Footage raises questions about self-defense narrative
Frisco Independent School District later released video footage from the stadium that captured the moments before and after the stabbing.
The surveillance video does not show any visible fight or struggle between the boys.
It instead depicts a group of people sitting quietly under the team tent, then suddenly dispersing as the incident takes place.
Later in the video, an ambulance can be seen arriving at the stadium. Paramedics attempt to reach Metcalf in the bleachers but are forced to carry a stretcher manually up the stands.
According to police, the knife believed to have been used was recovered near the tent area, after the scene was taped off.
Following the indictment, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis emphasized the gravity of the case and its emotional toll on the community.
“For weeks, my team has been presenting evidence to the grand jury,” Willis stated.
“Today, I summarized that evidence, and I asked the Grand Jury to return a first-degree murder indictment against Karmelo Anthony– which they did.”
He added, “We know this case has struck a deep nerve – here in Collin County and beyond. That’s understandable. When something like this happens at a school event, it shakes people to the core.”
Austin Metcalf‘s father, Jeff, welcomed the news. “Just that I am glad this process is moving forward, and I look ahead to the trial now,” he said.
Anthony‘s attorney, Mike Howard, responded with a video statement maintaining his client’s position and the hope for a fair trial.
“Karmelo and his family are confident in the justice system and the people of Collin County to be fair and impartial,” Howard said.
“Because it’s only in a trial that the full story can be heard, and that impartial justice can be done.”
Howard added that the defense will argue reasonable doubt remains and suggested Anthony may have acted in self-defense.
During his arrest, Anthony reportedly admitted to the stabbing. He told an officer, “I’m not alleged, I did it.”
He also asked whether Metcalf would survive and whether the incident might be considered self-defense.
Under Texas law, individuals aged 17 and older are treated as adults in the criminal justice system.
If convicted, Anthony faces between five and ninety-nine years or life in prison.
The case is now formally moving through the court system, with a trial date yet to be scheduled.

Manchester United have agreed a deal with Royal Antwerp for goalkeeper Senne Lammens for around £18.2m.The 23-year-old is travelling to Manchester to finalise his move and undergo a medical. „Důvodem protestu jsou hned dvě situace, při nichž došlo ke zranění našich hráčů a ze strany sudích ani VAR nebyly reflektovány,“ píše klub v prohlášení na svém webu. Plzni se především nelíbí vyhodnocení střetu záložníka Viktorie Denise Višinského s libereckým Kayondem, po kterém byl Višinský odvezen do nemocnice. „Náš hráč odehrál míč a poté došlo k nebezpečnému zákroku soupeře, který přišel do souboje pozdě a následoval úder do hlavy (obličeje). Tento zákrok způsobil našemu hráči vážně zranění v podobě otřesu mozku a zhmoždění obličejového skeletu, chvíli po střetu byl dokonce v bezvědomí. Následoval transport záchrankou do liberecké nemocnice, kde byl přes noc hospitalizován. Z našeho pohledu měl být tento zákrok vyhodnocen jako zjevný faul a za surovou hru potrestán červenou kartou vzhledem k pozdnímu příchodu, intenzitě kontaktu i ohrožení zdraví soupeře.
