Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, who is also co-producing the highly anticipated film ‘F1: The Movie’, has spoken about whether his personal experiences at the pinnacle of motorsport have influenced the characters played by Hollywood stars Brad Pitt and Damson Idris and also spoke about what this eagerly awaited film will be like.

‘F1: The Movie’, whose cinema release is scheduled for June 27, delves into the exciting world of Formula 1. Brad Pitt plays “Sonny Hayes”, a veteran retired driver who returns to the grid to guide the young and promising Joshua Pearce, played by Damson Idris. Their fictional team is called ‘APXGP’ and the film promises plenty of action and intensity, something that motorsport fans are used to experiencing.
During the London premiere, which was attended by numerous influential celebrities, including Lewis Hamilton himself, the British driver was directly asked if he saw reflections of himself in Pitt and Idris’ roles. Hamilton replied firmly: “I don’t think so. I think they’re their own characters. I mean, Damson is just Damson. And you can see him there. He just gave it his all. I see you, man. He’s loving this experience, and I remember seeing his recording early on, and I remember everyone in the room saying, ‘Yeah, he’s the guy for this,'” the driver explained.
While the characters are not directly based on Hamilton, his role as co-producer has been crucial in ensuring the film’s fidelity to the spirit of Formula 1. According to reports, Hamilton has helped the production team maintain authenticity during the filming of the exciting racing scenes. In addition, the film will incorporate real footage from the 2024 F1 season, which will further enhance its realism.

Brad Pitt highlights Hamilton’s role
In a conversation with F1 TV’s Will Buxton, Brad Pitt highlighted Hamilton’s contribution to the project: “Everyone has done their bit to perfect this, and then Lewis comes in for the ultimate ‘sniff test’. Lewis’ knowledge has been immensely helpful. He has kept us on track, saying ‘No, that doesn’t fly’, down to the sound. He can detect it and say ‘No, that’s Turn 12, not Turn 16. You need more reverb on the straight’, that’s how specific he is.”
Lewis Hamilton initially joined the project as a co-producer and has played a key role in the casting and adaptation of the story, ensuring that the true essence of Formula 1 is conveyed in a striking way on the big screen, and the actors have appreciated and highlighted this quite a bit.
A busy 2025 for Hamilton
Hamilton surprised the F1 world by announcing his departure from Mercedes after 12 years to join Ferrari for the 2025 season, seeking an eighth world championship. However, the Hamilton-Ferrari partnership has not lived up to initial expectations. Ferrari’s SF-25 has not performed as expected on track and Hamilton has yet to score a podium finish. His best result so far was a victory in the Chinese sprint race, starting from pole position.
Hamilton’s adaptation has not been easy in a rather hectic year, but off the track he is very motivated by the world of cinema and the expectations generated by this new film that will soon be in theaters.
