New York Giants co-owner John Mara, as he’s prone to do, set off alarms during the offseason when he brought back much-maligned general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. When he did so, it came with a caveat. He openly claimed he has “just about run out of patience“, and said that he must be “in a better mood this time next year” for both Schoen and Daboll to return in 2026.
That has set up a lame duck situation at two of the most important roles in the organization. Making matters more interesting is the team’s quarterback situation. Veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston were brought in to compete in Daniel Jones‘ absence, while the front office took a chance on rookie Jaxson Dart in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. While Wilson is expected to be the starter, could Dart force his way in in order to save Schoen and Daboll’s jobs?
Jaxson Dart could extend the New York life of Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll
While going through his offseason power rankings of all 32 NFL teams, Yahoo Sports’ Frank Schwab slotted in the Giants at No. 27. That’s not a surprise given their previous season performance and the offseason they had. But Schwab mentions something interesting in regard to Dart potentially starting for the team. In order for it to happen, Schoen and/or Daboll must feel like their job is on the line unless they turn to Dart.

If the Giants aren’t much better than last season, the biggest question will be when to give Dart a shot. The reality is that decision will be made by a coach and general manager who are in self-preservation mode. Whatever is best for their survival will play a role in that decision.
Both Schoen and Daboll don’t have a long leash. In fact, they are more than likely to both get fired at the end of this season unless the Giants make the playoffs. That will be very difficult considering they have the toughest schedule in the NFL.
Daboll could wait it out until the end of the season, with the Giants out of contention. Slotting in Dart and having the rookie play well under his watch could potentially afford him one more season in New York. Daboll could then turn to Mara and show him that he just needs time with Dart to turn around the franchise.
