Artigo: afagos nos vira-latas e bola pra frente, sem complexo

Foi no dia 31 de maio de 1958 que o tricolor Nelson Rodrigues forjou a expressão “complexo de vira-latas”, em uma crônica publicada na revista Manchete Esportiva que tratava da vindoura Copa do Mundo de 1958. Nelson discutia o sentimento da torcida brasileira, ainda traumatizada pela derrota em casa em 1950.

“Os jogadores já partiram e o Brasil vacila entre o pessimismo mais obtuso e a esperança mais frenética. Nas esquinas, nos botecos, por toda parte, há quem esbraveje: ‘O Brasil não vai nem se classificar!’. E, aqui, eu pergunto: não será esta atitude negativa o disfarce de um otimismo inconfesso e envergonhado?”, diz o cronista, em seu último texto antes da competição, que começaria no dia 10 de junho, na Suécia, e acabaria, como se sabe, com o Brasil campeão e o mundo assombrado pelo jovem Pelé, à época com 17 anos.

Nelson reconhece a ferida causada pela vitória do Uruguai no Maracanazo de 1950: “Dir-se-ia que foi ontem, e não há oito anos, que, aos berros, Obdulio arrancou, de nós, o título. Eu disse ‘arrancou’ como poderia dizer: ‘extraiu’ de nós o título como se fosse um dente”.

No entanto, ele afirma sua crença no escrete brasileiro: “sou de um patriotismo inatual e agressivo, digno de um granadeiro bigodudo”. É quando surge a expressão “Complexo de vira-latas”:

“Por ‘complexo de vira-latas’ entendo eu a inferioridade em que o brasileiro se coloca, voluntariamente, em face do resto do mundo. Isto em todos os setores e, sobretudo, no futebol. Dizer que nós nos julgamos ‘os maiores’ é uma cínica inverdade. Em Wembley, por que perdemos? Porque, diante do quadro inglês, louro e sardento, a equipe brasileira ganiu de humildade. Jamais foi tão evidente e, eu diria mesmo, espetacular o nosso vira-latismo”.

O futebol, sempre ele. O vira-latismo, ou vira-latice, está presente em quase tudo na vida nacional, desde cidades que disputam o título de mais violenta ou poluída até a descrença em um povo supostamente preguiçoso ou corrupto (aí entra, talvez, a raiz mais profunda do complexo: o colonialismo, que inclui o racismo e outros preconceitos criminosos), “pior” do que os outros, como se povos em si tivessem qualidades intrínsecas como honestidade, inteligência ou proatividade no DNA.

Na Copa do Mundo de Clubes, havia um pensamento mais ou menos coletivo: Flamengo, Fluminense e Palmeiras passariam para as oitavas de final, se passassem, atrás dos europeus (Chelsea, Borussia e Porto, respectivamente), e o pobre Botafogo não tinha chance em um grupo com Paris Saint-German e Atlético de Madrid. Logo o Flu foi bem contra o Borussia, o Botafogo venceu o PSG e o Fla atropelou o Chelsea. Além da justa euforia, vieram as justificativas: os pobres europeus louros e sardentos (hoje em dia, ainda bem, são também negros, árabes, morenos trigueiros) estão em fim de temporada, sofrem com o calor, não estão nem aí para o Mundial… Resultado: quatro brasileiros nas oitavas.

A péssima campanha do Porto (que subitamente passou a ser considerado “menos europeu” depois que ficou clara sua inferioridade dentro de campo), recebido com apupos após a eliminação, mostra que, além da importância dada à competição, a distância em campo é menor do que supunha o cãozinho caramelo SRD (sem raça definida, nome científico do “vira-lata”) que mora dentro de nós.

Os europeus, em média, têm um orçamento de que não dispomos aqui nos trópicos? Têm (embora com uma distância que tende a diminuir), e com ele as maiores chances de título. Mas a graça do futebol não esteve sempre no improvável (que, já vimos, é bem diferente do impossível)? Pois deixemos a efígie do vira-lata caramelo como um símbolo da salubérrima mistureba brasileira, e que Botafogo, Palmeiras, Flamengo e Fluminense joguem bola e se divirtam no Mundial.
