A tragic event unfolded Sunday in the northern Idaho city of Coeur d’Alene when a shooting left at least two people dead and several others injured while responding to a brush fire in the Canfield Mountain Natural Area. According to Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris, at least one active shooter remains at large, firing high-powered rifles at law enforcement. Officers reported bullets coming from multiple directions.

“We don’t know if there’s one, two, three or four shooters,” said Sheriff Norris. “We will neutralize this threat.”
Shelter-in-Place Order Issued
The incident took place in the Canfield Mountain Natural Area, a 24-acre park located on the eastern edge of the city. The park features multiple hiking and biking trails surrounded by dense forest, making the operation particularly dangerous and complex.
Kootenai County Emergency Management has issued a shelter-in-place order for residents in the area and asked the public to avoid the scene to allow emergency personnel to work safely.
The firefighters were reportedly targeted directly while attempting to contain the wildfire. Idaho Governor Brad Little condemned the attack, calling it a “heinous assault.”
“Multiple heroic firefighters were attacked today while responding to a fire in North Idaho,” Governor Little wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “This is a heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters. Teresa and I are heartbroken. We ask all Idahoans to pray for them and their families as we wait to learn more.”
Heavy Police Presence and Ongoing Investigation
Witnesses captured video and photos showing a strong law enforcement response. One video shows a police car speeding past a barricade set up to block access, while other officers secure nearby roads.
As of now, the exact number of injured remains unclear, and the identities of the victims have not been released. Authorities continue to search for the suspect or suspects amid challenging terrain and dense tree cover.
