Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard é um gigante de 2,03 metros de altura, nascido em Lyon, 36º no ranking mundial e bicampeão do ATP Tour (uma vez, no ano passado, em um torneio em sua cidade natal, ele derrotou Tomás Martín Etcheverry, de La Plata, na final). O saque, a 246,23 km/h, foi feito na quadra 1 contra o americano Taylor Fritz, na primeira rodada de Wimbledon. Curiosamente, Fritz conseguiu bloquear o golpe (que ressoou ainda mais devido à câmara de eco que há na quadra 1 e ao silêncio respeitoso da torcida) e acabou conquistando o ponto na rede.
O duelo entre os dois teve a conclusão adiada para esta terça-feira, e Fritz acabou levando a melhor. Assista ao lance no vídeo abaixo.
Os dois primeiros sets foram vencidos por Mpetshi Perricard, por 7-6 (8-6) e 7-6 (10-8); enquanto o americano, quinto cabeça de chave, venceu o terceiro e o quarto sets, por 6-4 e 7-6 (8-6). Fritz levou o quinto set (6-4) e despachou o francês da competição.
O saque de Mpetshi Perricard, de 21 anos, foi mais rápido que o recordista anterior, um foguete de 238 km/h lançado pelo americano Taylor Dent em 2010, de acordo com os registros oficiais do principal torneio disputado no All England Club. No ano passado, um saque do americano Ben Shelton foi registrado a 246 km/h no radar da partida, mas isso não foi confirmado posteriormente nas estatísticas oficiais.
O recorde de saque mais rápido em geral ainda é detido pelo australiano Sam Groth durante o Challenger de 2012 em Busan, na Coreia do Sul: 263 km/h, durante uma derrota por 6-4 e 6-3 na segunda rodada para o bielorrusso Uladzimir Ignatik. Groth, que alcançou o 53º lugar no ranking mundial em 2015, tinha 1,93 m de altura e competiu pela última vez em 2018.
Wimbledon, o principal torneio de tênis do mundo, permite jogos em suas quadras All England até as 23h (motivo pelo qual, por exemplo, a partida entre Fritz e Mpetshi Perricard foi adiada). Isso, apesar da instalação de um teto retrátil e iluminação artificial no estádio principal em 2009. Por quê?
