Generální manažer Maple Leafs Brad Treliving na poslední chvíli alespoň trochu zmírnil následky, když s Marnerem po dohodě s Golden Knights podepsal osmiletou smlouvu na 96 milionů dolarů a následně ho vyměnil za Nicolase Roye. Z velké útočné čtyřky tak Torontu zbývá už jen trio Auston Matthews, William Nylander a John Tavares.
Marner stihnul za kanadský klub považovaný za rodinné stříbro během devíti sezon sehrát 657 zápasů základní části s bilancí 221+520. Jenže v play off končilo Toronto už v prvních kolech a jeho management se rozhodl vydat trochu jinou cestou.
Zájemců o Marnerovy služby bylo dosti. „Je chytrý, má hlavu nahoře a neustále je v obraze. V tom je na úplně jiné úrovni, jeho předvídavost je fantastická,“ tvrdil spoluhráč Max Pacioretty.
Zajímaly se Chicago i Anaheim, spekulovalo se dokonce o Bostonu, ale v licitaci uspěly těžké váhy z Vegas, které od vstupu do NHL v sezoně 2017-18 každoročně patří k favoritům. Jak se Marner u Golden Knights prosadí, bude záležet i na Tomáši Hertlovi, který by mohl šéfovat lajně s novou posilou na křídle.
S Marnerovou smlouvou Golden Knights výrazně přešvihli platový strop, který je na příští sezonu ustaven na 95,5 milionu dolarů a Vegas se dostalo na 102 miliony. Zařazení beka Alexe Pietrangela na seznam dlouhodobě zraněných ale vrací klub pod hodnotu platového limitu. Generální manažer Kelly McCrimmon má tedy odpracováno.

Na osm let za 64 milionů dolarů si plácl s držitelem Conn Smythe Trophy Samem Bennettem. V pondělí pak uzavřel dohody s bekem Aaronem Ekbladem (8 let, 48,8 milionu) a své úsilí korunoval podpisem pod smlouvu Brada Marchanda. Sedmatřicetiletý útočník dostal od Panthers šestiletou smlouvu (!) na 31,5 milionu…
Bývalý bostonský kapitán oněch několik týdnů po výměně z Bruins označil za nejlepší okamžiky kariéry. K obhajobě Stanley Cupu přispěl šesti góly ve finále s Edmontonem a získal si náklonnost spoluhráčů i fanoušků z Panthers. A nová smlouva (do 43 let) je i výrazem Zitovy vděčnosti.
