There’s no doubt that the Cleveland Browns deeply regret what they did to Baker Mayfield three years ago, after a rough season for the quarterback-combined with injuries-they basically gave him away at the time to the Carolina Panthers, and they signed Deshaun Watson, who has turned out to be a complete disaster.
Shedeur Sanders gets uneasy over a sensitive topic
The Cleveland Browns went all-in on Deshaun Watson back then, giving him five years and $230 million, fully guaranteed. The bet has failed. He has only played 19 games, thrown just 19 touchdown passes, and is currently injured. It will be very difficult for him to play again in a Browns uniform.
Meanwhile, Baker Mayfield-after several bumps in his career-had an impressive season last year with 4,500 yards, 41 touchdown passes, and a playoff berth with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Browns, on the other hand, have four quarterbacks-meaning none, as John Madden would say.
Kenny Pickett was compared to Baker Mayfield
The Cleveland Browns currently have Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, along with the injured Deshaun Watson. All of them have been mentioned as potential starters, but one quarterback who is being overlooked is Kenny Pickett-though he might actually have a chance.
Baker Mayfield found success in the NFL-maybe not right away-and Kenny Pickett could follow the same path. He had ups and downs with the Steelers and was merely a backup with the Eagles. Cameron Wolfe from NFL Network analyzed the quarterback:
“[Kevin Stefanski] talked about Kenny Pickett and his talent, and the feeling that they can get more out of him as well,” Wolfe said on The Insiders. “We’ve seen in the past Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold have career resurgences, and there’s a belief they can do something similar with Kevin Stefanski.”
Let’s remember Kenny Pickett was the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first-round pick in 2022 and played 25 games in two years. Also, Browns receiver Diontae Johnson revealed that Kevin Stefanski is showing a preference toward Pickett, which could be surprising once training camp begins.
