Tiger Woods’ absence throughout 2025 has left a noticeable void in the world of golf, robbing it of much of its appeal and excitement. His magnetic presence has always elevated the prestige of any tournament he participates in, and without him, the sport feels less complete.
Unfortunately, last year, while training at home after recovering from a back surgery, Woods suffered a torn Achilles tendon. That setback ruled him out of competitive play for the foreseeable future, extinguishing hopes of a return to the elite events that once defined his legendary career.

As I began to ramp up my own training and practice at home, I felt a sharp pain in my left Achilles, which was deemed to be ruptured.
A precisely executed surgery
Fortunately for Woods and the millions of fans who long to see him compete at the highest level again, the surgery was successful. Dr. Charlton Stucken performed a minimally invasive procedure at the Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach.
The operation went smoothly, and the expectation is that his recovery will follow a similar path. Though he’s not yet ready to return to competition, Woods has remained active in other ways. In June, he was seen supporting his son, Charlie Woods, at the Florida Amateur Open, taking on his fatherly duties with pride despite his own physical limitations.
Drawing attention even from the sidelines
It’s simply in Tiger’s nature to command attention, even when he’s not swinging a club. His legacy and exceptional talent keep him relevant in every conversation about golf, whether he’s competing or not.
His longtime caddie and close friend, Steve Williams, recently shared reflections on a defining moment in Woods’ career during an appearance on The Yardage Book NZ podcast.
Tiger hadn’t have won the PGA in ’99, he would have entered the 2000 season still searching for that second major… he may not have had the career that he had… the ’99 one was very important.”..That second major win wasn’t just about adding a trophy to his collection-it marked a mental turning point. It was the moment Woods proved to himself and the world that he could not only win a major, but win again, something not all players are capable of doing.
Trying to win that second one, it’s just-it’s so difficult. Look at Adam Scott… look at Justin Rose in the last two majors. These are two guys that are desperately trying to get to their second major championship. It’s just nearly impossible. It’s not impossible.
From that pivotal win, Tiger Woods’ ascent into the upper echelon of golf history was set in motion. His legend began to crystallize, placing him firmly among the greatest of all time.
