Tom Brady may have hung up his cleats, but his name continues to spark headlines – even in combat sports as a former UFC double champion finds himself red-faced after a hilarious mix-up.
Henry Cejudo inadvertently brought Brady into the world of MMA and took the ex-New England Patriot by surprise, as he got the seven-time Super Bowl champion slightly confused with Sean Brady.
Tom Brady shocks NFL fans by telling LeBron James the only reason he would come out of retirement
“I mean, we potentially have a matchup between Ian Garry vs Tom [Sean] Brady,” Cejudo said on the Pound 4 Pound podcast. “They’ve been talking down to each other’s throats, and who knows? Maybe they will finally make that fight happen.”
Speaking to Kamaru Usman, his analysis of the welterweight division quickly went viral and he drew immediate attention across sports media, as fans and analysts alike reacted to the surreal moment.
Though the name slip is no doubt able to be chalked up to a simple mistake, the irony of pulling in the NFL all-timer into UFC conversations was not lost on audiences, but does underscores the magnitude of Tom‘s cultural relevance.
Even after retirement, the quarterback remains one of the most recognizable names in American sports history, which may explain why his name instinctively surfaced during a heated MMA discussion.
The situation was made even more bizarre by the fact that Brady recently made an appearance at a UFC event – and according to sources close to the scene, it wasn’t entirely by choice.
It was Cejudo himself who reportedly “dragged” him to the fight card, further fueling speculation about how the quarterback felt about being in the spotlight once again. So Brady appears to have been on his mind a lot lately.
Brady’s Raiders land big nod ahead of 2025/26 NFL season
While the legend has long embraced new ventures, from his FOX Sports broadcasting deal to ownership stakes in the Las Vegas Raiders, being mistaken for a potential UFC fighter certainly wasn’t on the itinerary.
And at the age of 47, a switch to MMA seems unlikely as he continues focusing on that venture with the Raiders, whom he is a part-owner with and is helping steer a revamped franchise that has earned renewed optimism heading into the 2025 season.
Notably, the CBS Sports analyst, John Breech, recently praised the organization’s direction, noting the significant front-office and coaching changes led by new head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Spytek.
“Yes it is a re-vamped everything,” Breech said. “We have Pete Carroll at the top, we have a new head coach and a new offensive coordinator, new quarterback, and the biggest question for me is what is Geno Smith going to look like in Chip Kelly’s offense?”
They will take on the New England Patriots on September 7 to open their 2025/26 NFL campaign as they compete in the same AFC West division as the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos.
