The University of North Carolina’s decision to hire Bill Belichick as its new head football coach was met with national intrigue, but inside the university community, the move has ignited considerable internal dissent – centered around his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson.

Newly surfaced emails obtained through public records requests reveal that numerous donors, faculty members, and alumni have expressed frustration with the 24-year-old woman, who seems unable to avoid controversy.
While Belichick‘s football pedigree is indisputable, his arrival in Chapel Hill has stirred backlash over perceived misaligned priorities, nepotism, and concerns that personal relationships are becoming entangled with institutional responsibilities.

“What a total embarrassment to UNC. I am withdrawing all my donations and future donations,” one long-time backer said in a strongly worded message to UNC leadership.
“There’s not enough money to hire the numbers of professors we need, but paying a 73-year-old guy with no college football experience 10 millions is OK (and then letting him hire his son),” a faculty member pondered to the UNC.
The university had announced that the athletic director, Bubba Cunningham, would transition into an advisory role in 2026, but many critics are holding him accountable for Belichick’s hire and the broader optics surrounding it.
Why is Jordon Hudson so controversial?
Hudson’s proximity to university athletic affairs has become a flashpoint as her visibility within the program has led to pointed criticism, although university officials have not commented publicly on her role.
In one email addressed to Cunningham, a faculty member questioned whether Hudson had effectively become a de facto face of the athletic department, underscoring just how deep the tensions are running.
“When you agreed to pay a king’s ransom to hire Bill Belichick,” an anonymous writer said in the email. “Did you also know that you [were] hiring Jordon Hudson to serve as the primary face of UNC athletics?
“Normally I would say the University should not concern itself with its employees’ personal lives. But when a prominent employee injects his significant other into the University’s affairs, it becomes the University’s concern.
“She’s already an embarrassment and it’s only going to get worse. Please end this circus before the season begins.”
Whilst another individual went further, accusing the department of tolerating impropriety with her involvement, although it remains unclear what information she is privy to and what she does – if anything.
The emails indicate a larger concern that Belichick‘s hiring, and the publicity surrounding his personal life, risks undermining the university’s credibility and reputation, even if it brings them on-field football success.
Belichick‘s tenure will begin in earnest on September 1, when North Carolina hosts the TCU Horned Frogs. But before the Tar Heels take the field, the coach must confront the growing internal unrest surrounding his appointment.
