Patrick Mahomes loses “Superman” status and gets ranked behind top quarterbacks, tied with Jalen Hurts

No one is totally sure what the Kansas City Chiefs are going to look like as a team in 2025. A brutal Super Bowl loss has the capacity to mark the descent of a dynasty that has rode high for so many years, but thanks to Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Andy Reid, the Chiefs aren’t the type of team to completely decline one season later.

But in order for the Chiefs to continue reigning supreme, they need Mahomes to get back to MVP form. Kansas City’s defense paved the way in 2024, but defensive success hasn’t historically been sticky year-over-year. Mahomes is still fully capable of single-handedly winning games for his team, but he may be slipping as an elite one-man army in the eyes of some analysts.

Patrick Mahomes shows the world how he stays chill under pressure in a flamboyant way

Patrick Mahomes isn’t considered the superhero he once was

Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports put together a list of the top five players who most embody Superman in terms of “heart, heroics and awe-inspiring physical gifts“. Mahomes came in at No. 5, tied with Jalen Hurts, with three other quarterbacks ahead of them. Benjamin had this to say about Mahomes’ ranking.

Neither Hurts nor Mahomes may be everyone’s cup of tea as increasingly rugged rather than aesthetically marvelous leaders, but they adapt to the moment when it matters most. Mahomes, on the other hand, once set a standard for superhuman production as a big-play machine, only to evolve into more of a calculated — you might even say Clark Kent-ian — winner of more recent seasons.

The rest of the list is as follows.

  1. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens
  2. Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills
  3. Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals
  4. Justin Jefferson, Minnesota Vikings

While it’s true that Mahomes hasn’t had a truly extraordinary statistical season since 2022, he’s still more than capable of carrying the Chiefs offense when they need it. With a clean bill of health, a more stout offensive line and plenty of weapons to throw the ball to, we may see Mahomes climb that ranking heading into next season.

Can Cal Raleigh beat Aaron Judge for AL MVP?

Neither Aaron Judge nor Cal Raleigh is losing sleep over the American League Most Valuable Player Award. The two superstars have much bigger fish to fry. Individual trophies, for players of this ilk, are nice, but Judge and Raleigh are certainly more fixated on shepherding their clubs into the postseason.Thankfully, the rest of us can still gawk and gab about how their spectacular seasons match up. After all, it has been quite a ride.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAs Raleigh was clubbing tater after tater during the season’s first half, the joyous incredulity that caused was coupled with an understandable skepticism. “He can’t possibly keep doing this,” neutral ballfans mused to themselves. Judge, despite Raleigh’s long-ball outburst, remained a similarly valuable player. And across the 162-game marathon (or so the thinking went), Judge would gradually pull away from Raleigh, with his superheroic offensive impact winning out […]
