The UFC world has united in a wave of support for Ben Askren, the former Olympic wrestler and star of the sport, who recently overcame a tough medical battle that culminated in a double lung transplant. Most notably, this support comes in the form of an emotional message from an unexpected source, his former rival Jorge Masvidal
The 40-year-old was hospitalized in Wisconsin after contracting a severe case of pneumonia, triggered by a staph infection. His health quickly deteriorated, leading to him being intubated in June and eventually, on June 24, listed on the donor list for a double lung transplant.

Askren’s situation has been quite tough for both him and his family, and he has received a lot of support from fans of the sport and some well-known fighters. It is hoped that little by little he will be able to recover and win one of the most difficult fights he has ever had.
A tough road
In an emotional Instagram video shared on July 9 from his hospital bed, a visibly emaciated and distressed Askren, alongside his wife Amy, revealed the seriousness of his situation. He shared that he has “no memory” of a one-month period of his treatment (from late May to early July) and that his heart stopped four times for intervals of about 20 seconds. He also mentioned losing 50 pounds in just 45 days, reaching a weight of 147 pounds, something he had not seen since he was 15 years old.
Despite the immense challenge, Askren expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of love and support he received from the wrestling and MMA communities. “What impacted me the most was all the love I felt from everyone,” he said, adding that he felt “almost as if I had attended my own funeral”.
The support of an old ‘enemy’
Among the many who wished him a speedy recovery, one particularly poignant message came from Jorge Masvidal. The rivalry between the two is legendary: in their UFC 239 fight in 2019, Askren’s taunts led Masvidal to respond with the fastest knockout in UFC history, landing a flying knee just five seconds into the fight.
Despite this enmity, witnessing his former opponent’s struggle to save his life prompted Masvidal to put aside past differences.
“What’s up, my brother? I know we were rivals in the ring. I just want to say, God bless you. And when I get back to America, if I can go shake your hand, brother, and just pray with you, that would be amazing, man,” Masvidal commented in a video.
“I know you’re going to get through this because you’re a fucking warrior, brother. God bless you. Your story is incredibly inspiring for what you’re going through right now. God bless you, and I hope to come back and be able to shake your hand,” added the fighter who showed everyone that health is the most important thing and that rivalries are in the past when it comes to fighting for your life.
