Oscar de la Hoya criticizes Manny Pacquiao’s return to the ring

Manny Pacquiao’s return to professional boxing has generated a wave of reactions in the sporting world, and one of the most prominent voices to speak out has been that of Oscar de la Hoya

The former boxer and current promoter expressed doubts about the Filipino’s return to the ring at the age of 46, especially in a high-profile bout against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios, scheduled for July 19, 2025 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Manny Pacquiao training for his professional boxing comeback

Although De La Hoya is not completely opposed to Pacquiao‘s return, he did make it clear that he has one specific concern:

I’m a little worried about the speed

Óscar de la Hoya

According to the president of Golden Boy Promotions, while punching power can be maintained with age, the speed key to Pacquiao’s style tends to diminish over time.

A warning with respect

De la Hoya, who was defeated by Pacquiao in 2008 in a fight that marked the end of his career as a boxer, offered his comments from a position of respect and experience.

You’re 46 years old, remember that. There’s nothing wrong with taking a day off or two

Óscar de la Hoya

Despite his reservations, De La Hoya also expressed confidence in the Filipino’s skills

He will do well. He has experience. He has the power, because that is never lost

Óscar de la Hoya

However, he insisted that Barrios‘ youth could be a determining factor in the outcome of the fight.

Barrios, a hungry rival

Mario Barrios, 30, represents a considerable challenge for Pacquiao. De la Hoya described him as “a live dog”, referring to his energy, stamina and hunger for victory. Although Barrios has had an inconsistent 2024, with a tough fight against Fabian Maidana and a split draw against Abel Ramos, he is still a world champion in top physical shape.

De La Hoya admitted he was not fully aware of Barrios‘ current status, but stressed that youth and speed could tip the balance in his favor. In a sport where reflexes and endurance are crucial, the age difference between the two fighters could be more than symbolic.

Pacquiao’s legacy at stake

Manny Pacquiao has not fought since his loss to Yordenis Ugas in 2021, and his last victory was in 2019 against Keith Thurman. His return has been met with enthusiasm from his followers, but also with concern from experts and former colleagues. Figures such as Bob Arum and Amir Khan have also expressed divided opinions on the advisability of this return.

For many, Pacquiao has already secured his place in boxing history as the only eight-division world champion. However, his decision to return to the ring at the age of 46 raises questions about the physical risks and the impact that defeat could have on his legacy.

A glorious return or a risky gamble?

The fight between Pacquiao and Barrios promises to be one of the most talked about events of the year. Beyond the result, the fight represents a generational clash and a litmus test for the Filipino veteran. Oscar de la Hoya, with his experience both inside and outside the ring, offers a valuable perspective: respect for the legend, but also a warning about the limits of the human body.

As fans eagerly await July 19, the question remains: will this be the triumphant return of a legend or a gamble that should not have been made?

The massive upset was Penn State's second in a row after falling at previously winless UCLA on Oct. 4, making it the first FBS team since 1978 to lose back-to-back games as favorites of at least 20 points. Associate head coach and cornerbacks coach Terry Smith will serve as interim for the remainder of the 2025 season. "Penn State owes an enormous amount of gratitude to Coach Franklin who rebuilt our football […]
