The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback saga seems to have no end, and every day brings a new chapter. The reality is that the franchise has become a spectacle, far from the team that made the playoffs in the 2023-24 season with an 11-6 record. That now feels like a long time ago.
Shedeur Sanders had no idea what was coming during awkward live moment
All eyes are on the Browns-not because the franchise is thriving (they’ve only had four winning seasons since 1999)-but because one of their quarterbacks is Shedeur Sanders. He was projected to enter the NFL as a first-round star prospect, but the media-hyped player ended up falling to the fifth round, and things have become complicated.
At the moment, Shedeur Sanders is the team’s fourth-string quarterback, behind Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. Additionally, Sanders is the only quarterback who hasn’t taken a single rep with the first team during recent practices.
Joe Flacco could be traded, according to insider
Despite betting odds favoring Joe Flacco to be the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback in Week 1, recent weeks have brought rumors that Kenny Pickett is actually head coach Kevin Stefanski’s top choice. One of the sources behind this situation is Browns wide receiver Diontae Johnson.
As a result, Bleacher Report writer Matt Holder suggested that Joe Flacco could be cut or traded in order to acquire some draft picks for the 40-year-old quarterback.
“While Flacco could be the starting quarterback in Cleveland this year, let’s be honest, the Browns are going to have a tough time being a playoff contender this season,” Holder wrote. “So, allowing Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, or Shedeur Sanders to show whether they can be the franchise’s future at quarterback is a better long-term plan than sticking with a 40-year-old on a one-year contract. Meanwhile, trading Flacco could yield some draft capital from a team that needs a veteran backup.”
We’re just days away from the start of the Cleveland Browns’ training camp, and Kevin Stefanski’s current stance of an “open competition” for the starting quarterback job will soon need to change-he’ll have to make a decision.
