Adam Sandler is known for blending Hollywood and sports, but this summer’s “Happy Gilmore 2” brings one of football’s biggest personalities to the big screen.
Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is making headlines not for his moves on the field, but for his comedic turn in Sandler’s latest Netflix film, set to debut on July 25.
Sandler, 58, could not hide his enthusiasm when talking about his new castmates. At the New York City premiere, he singled out Kelce and global music sensation Bad Bunny, who also has a featured role in the film.
“Travis and Bunny are ridiculous in it,” Sandler told People. “Every athlete kicks a**.”
Kelce‘s role as a hotel employee puts him in the middle of the action alongside a familiar cast, including Sandler, Ben Stiller, Christopher McDonald, and Julie Bowen. But it was Kelce‘s natural ease on set that made a real impression.
“Travis is such a gentle, nice guy, and funny as hell,” Sandler told Entertainment Tonight. “He’s like the guys I grew up with. When I was with Travis, it reminded me of my buddies in high school and just being able to laugh and say the things you want to say.”
A football star steps into Hollywood
Sandler continued his praise on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, declaring Kelce “unbelievable” and “solid as a rock” in front of the camera. This glowing endorsement was echoed by Kelce himself, who has not been shy about his excitement.
“That was a dream come true,” Kelce said on ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show. “I thought SNL was going to be the peak of my acting and showman or entertainment career. Working with Happy Gilmore himself, the Sandman and Happy Productions, it was off the chain.”
In the new sequel, Sandler returns as the hot-tempered golfer Happy Gilmore. But this time, Happy is balancing family life and a return to competitive golf, with Kelce’s hotel worker character adding a fresh dynamic.
Bad Bunny joins as Oscar, bringing his own charisma to the ensemble. The cast is rounded out by fan favorites Ben Stiller, Christopher McDonald, and Julie Bowen reprising their original roles.
Sandler dropped hints about the film’s storyline on Good Morning America, saying, “His life isn’t perfect right now, at least at the beginning of the movie. And he’s a family man, and he’s gettin’ back into the golf game.”
A new chapter for Kelce and the Happy Gilmore legacy
The addition of Travis Kelce, a two-time Super Bowl champion and known personality both on and off the field, is part of a wider trend of athletes crossing over into the world of entertainment.
Kelce‘s sense of humor and relaxed attitude made him a perfect fit for the Happy Gilmore sequel, which blends slapstick, heart, and nostalgia for fans old and new.
Sandler also talked about the excitement of seeing audiences react to Bad Bunny‘s appearance: “Wherever he is, the reaction is so crazy. Women do go extra crazy.”
He shared that his own wife was among those excited fans, joking, “My wife was the highest scream I’ve ever heard but quietly. She didn’t want to get caught.”
While Sandler remains the driving force of the franchise, the buzz around Kelce’s comedic chops suggests this could be more than just a one-off cameo for the NFL star.
With a blend of returning favorites and new faces, “Happy Gilmore 2” aims to introduce the beloved golf comedy to a whole new generation.
The film premieres globally on Netflix on July 25, with plenty of curiosity about how Kelce‘s performance stacks up against his All-Pro resume.
