Only three days into training camp in Oxnard, several players are already eager to make their mark on the Dallas Cowboys. Among them, rookie Donovan Ezeiruaku has left some of the most impressive early impressions on the coaching staff.
Ezeiruaku’s standout performances have come even without full pads, yet the former Boston College Eagles defender is already showcasing the quality needed to separate himself from veterans on the roster. If this trajectory continues, the Cowboys’ defense could enter the season fully primed and energized – a promising sign as kickoff approaches.

Youth, as they say, is a treasure, and Donovan is taking full advantage of it. Over the past few days, he has proven that his speed is one of his defining attributes. In every pass-rush rep, he attacks relentlessly, and when dropping into coverage, he consistently finds his way to the ball. This combination has elevated him above his peers and drawn praise from offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.
Veteran players have also been caught off guard by Ezeiruaku’s relentless motor. His effort on every snap, unmatched so far in camp, suggests he’s determined to make an early impact as a Cowboy.
He had a good day and jumped off the field,” Schottenheimer said. “You guys like, ‘Oh, there he is again. There he is again. There’s that man again.
The rookie’s skill set has thoroughly impressed the staff. Everything he does seems sharp: attacking blockers, evading traffic, and zeroing in on quarterbacks to make big plays.
We’re seeing what we loved about him on film, and just the speed and the effortlessness that it takes to rush the passer is really good. But also, to his credit, he’s more than just a one-trick pony that’s a pass rusher. He can set the edge with that length that he has and having a really good camp.
Coaches and teammates alike expect him to maintain this form heading into the 2025 season, when his contribution will be vital. The repetitions he’s receiving now will inevitably accelerate his development, and while it’s too early to declare his future, signs point toward significant upside.
If he maintains this level once pads come on, comparisons to Micah Parsons’ immediate impact won’t seem far-fetched. Parsons is now one of the league’s premier defenders, and Ezeiruaku could follow a similar trajectory.
While playoff odds remain slim – with divisional rivals Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders appearing stronger on paper – the emergence of Ezeiruaku offers Dallas renewed optimism heading into 2025 and beyond.
The Dallas Cowboys will require all their strength to try to reach the playoffs this season, and with Donovan in their defense, this could be possible. He just needs to stay healthy and acquire all the knowledge his acquiring at this time.
