Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has received praise after featuring in Happy Gilmore 2, the sequel to the popular 1996 comedy, and not just from his partner Taylor Swift.
Released on Netflix, the film marks Kelce’s first major on-screen role, drawing attention both for his involvement and for the return of Adam Sandler in the title role.
Chiefs show how much Travis Kelce has changed through his 13-year career
Kelce’s transition into acting follows his appearance in Episode 77 of the New Heights podcast, co-hosted with his brother Jason Kelce.
That episode featured a conversation with Sandler and explored the actor’s career, with discussions that hinted at future collaborations. The release of the film has now brought those early conversations into sharper focus.
Industry praise despite premiere absence
Director Kyle Newacheck commended Kelce for his adaptability on set, noting his “natural charisma” and timing. Co-star Christopher McDonald, reprising his role as Shooter McGavin, described Kelce’s acting as “surprisingly good” and highlighted his athleticism, which translated well on screen.
Despite his participation in the project, Kelce did not attend the film’s premiere in New York due to NFL training camp obligations. His absence underscores his continued prioritization of professional football commitments, even as he explores opportunities in entertainment.
The film’s release also drew attention on social media after Taylor Swift posted about it on Instagram.
Swift praised the film in her Instagram Story, stating: “Happy Gilmore 2 had me cackling and cheering the whole movie! An absolute must-watch, 13/10, go watch it on @netflix as soon as humanly possible.”
Her post included the official film poster, which shows Adam Sandler wearing a hockey jersey with the name “Gilmore” and the number 18. This is different to Kelce, who famously wears 87 for the Chiefs.
A new path for Kelce?
While Swift did not directly reference Kelce in the post, the choice of imagery and enthusiastic language has prompted speculation about a possible personal message of support. The singer, who has been publicly linked to Kelce, did not comment further.
Kelce’s role in Happy Gilmore 2 reflects a broader trend of athletes expanding their presence into media and entertainment.
As the NFL season approaches, his performance has added to his growing profile outside of sports. Whether Kelce will pursue additional acting roles remains to be seen, but his initial reception has been notably positive.
