“Não tenho roupa para me sentar aqui!” Soltei essa frase, uma das preferidas do meu compadre Aydano André Motta, ao cumprimentá-lo numa das mesas do aniversário de uma amiga querida, Fernanda Godoy. E logo percebi que daquela vez não era só brincadeira. Em outras cadeiras, estavam Ancelmo Gois, Dorrit Harazim, Miriam Leitão e Flávia Oliveira — um grupo de colunistas que o GLOBO poderia mandar para concurso, para usar uma expressão de outro a ocupar estas páginas, Luis Fernando Verissimo. Tudo gente boa e que eu já conhecia pessoalmente, com maior ou menor grau de intimidade. Mas, quando fizeram questão de se apertar para que eu e Simone, minha mulher, pudéssemos nos acomodar, bateu exatamente a sensação que tenho ao ocupar este espaço: olha só onde vim parar.

Logo eu, que adoro aquela frase do Groucho Marx: “Não quero pertencer a um clube que me aceita como sócio”, num e noutro caso tive de me contradizer. As horas passadas à mesa no aniversário da Fernanda foram uma aula magna de jornalismo, ministrada na forma de um papo animado e divertidíssimo. Ainda precisei fingir um pouquinho de costume, mais ou menos como faço agora, enquanto escrevo uma coluna para ser publicada na edição comemorativa dos cem anos de um jornal que já teve entre seus cronistas esportivos — só para citar dois exemplos — os irmãos que foram os maiores desse ofício no Brasil: Mario Filho e Nelson Rodrigues.

O GLOBO era o jornal que chegava à minha casa desde a infância em Bicas — impresso em papel, como esta edição que vou guardar, mas ainda sem o recurso da assinatura; era preciso comprar na banca do Padula, a única da cidade. Foi no dia 2 de abril de 1991, quando cheguei à Rua Irineu Marinho, 35, para começar como estagiário da editoria de Esportes, que me senti pela primeira vez como naquela mesa. Acompanhar um repórter numa cobertura era também pôr um rosto nos nomes que assinavam as matérias que eu lia. Essa gente que eu já admirava me acolheu e me orientou, durante o estágio e após a contratação, como também o fizeram redatores, chefes de reportagem e editores. Alguns são meus amigos até hoje, outros foram mais longe e me adotaram como irmão mais novo, e há também os que já se foram. Nunca me perdoaria se esquecesse de citar um só deles, e é por isso que vou escolher o caminho seguro do agradecimento coletivo.

Sei que falando assim parece que passei uma vida aqui dentro, mas fui repórter do GLOBO por apenas seis destes cem anos de história. É que minha formação como jornalista se fez naquela redação dos anos 90 — reproduzida com perfeição pela inteligência artificial na série do Globoplay. Durante esse tempo, errei muito, mas aprendi princípios éticos que me acompanham até hoje. Discordei várias vezes de decisões e métodos de meus superiores, não só no Esporte. Nunca achei que trabalhava num jornal perfeito ou infalível, e fazer esses questionamentos também me ensinou. Toda trajetória no jornalismo é uma busca, e a minha me levou de volta para casa, com o convite para ocupar este espaço em 2016.

Nunca poderia imaginar que estaria aqui hoje. Nem que, nesse caminho, dividiria mesas, conversas e coberturas com tanta gente tão boa que escreve uma história centenária do jornalismo brasileiro. Me perdoem, mas hoje não é dia para pudores: a este clube eu quero pertencer.
