The Las Vegas Raiders officially ended their tenure with defensive tackle Christian Wilkins yesterday, one year into his $110 million contract. The move marks a pivotal organizational turn under new GM John Spytek and head coach Pete Carroll, with team dynamics and the salary cap shaping a clear message: performance and accountability matter more than star power.

The collapse of Wilkins’ Raider stint
Wilkins signed a four-year, $110 million deal in March 2024, but his season was cut short in Week 5 by a Jones fracture in his foot. Disagreement over surgery and rehab protocol escalated tensions between the player and medical staff. He was placed on the PUP list entering training camp, and the team eventually decided his return path was unclear.
The Raiders designated Wilkins as a terminated vested veteran, voiding $35.2 million in guaranteed future salary. In response, Wilkins has filed a grievance with the NFLPA, seeking recourse on the contract dispute. League sources suggest Las Vegas may ultimately be liable for roughly half the guaranteed money, as per CBA stipulations.
Carroll & Spytek pivot to a new plan
In the wake of Wilkins’ release, Pete Carroll emphasized the Raiders remain committed to competition. He cited players such as Tyree Wilson and Jonah Laulu, along with rookies Tonka Hemingway and JJ Pegues, as prime candidates to fill internal rotations on the defensive front. Carroll praised Wilson’s versatility and Laulu’s consistency, noting both birng energy and adaptability to the unit.
The decision underscores John Spytek’s approach to team-building: investing in younger, developmental talent rather than chasing expensive free agents. Malcolm Koonce is slated to start opposite Maxx Crosby, a duo Carroll and Spytek hope can carry the edge rush in 2025. Returning Patrick Graham adds continuity for players rehabbing injuries, with Koonce himself returning from a torn ACL and eager to prove himself.
