Travis Kelce‘s jump into acting has brought unexpected changes to the Kansas City Chiefs‘ training camp as Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes react to the tight end’s latest off-field venture.
As the three-time Super Bowl champion makes his big screen debut in Happy Gilmore 2, both his quarterback and has head coach have expressed their enthusiasm while also stressing the team’s focus heading into the new season.
Patrick Mahomes team up with Rob Gronkowski and leaves Travis Kelce with a lot of questions
The 35-year-old’s role in the Adam Sandler-led sequel surprised many, but he has proven to be a hit. So, rather than treat it as a distraction, Reid and Mahomes embraced the moment, joining teammates to watch Kelce‘s performance together.
It was a rare instance of Hollywood intersecting with the NFL in a way that galvanized, rather than splintered, a locker room and Damon West, who had been invited to speak to the team, shared a glimpse of this internal moment.
“Thank you, Coach Reid,” West posted to social media. “For the invitation to share the coffee bean message with the Kansas City Chiefs…
“Watching Happy Gilmore 2 with Pat, Travis, and the whole team is something I’ll never forget.”
The football player, for his part, appeared humbled by the moment by choosing to reflected on how personal and professional milestones collided as he pivots to movies after his successful debut on television in FX’s Grotesquerie show.
“Man, this life is crazy!! Still so surreal I got this opportunity. Adam Sandler, and most surprisingly, Andy Reid were there,” Kelce wrote to social media, whilst Taylor Swift also encouraged people to watch his effort.
Does Kelce’s acting debut mean he isn’t focused on the 2025/26 NFL season?
Rather than becoming a sideshow, his foray into acting has become a symbol of trust and unity within the Chiefs and demonstrates the unity within the clubhouse at the Arrowhead Stadium.
And crucially, it doesn’t seem to have taken anything away from their on-field preparation for preseason, ahead of an opening day clash with the Los Angeles Chargers in the first week of September.
“It kind of helps you out on some of those extra workouts that you don’t want to do,” Mahomes admitted, referencing the emotional sting of losing Super Bowl LIX. “We didn’t win that last game.
“But we had a lot of success last year… You always have to get better.”
Coach Reid echoed that urgency and it turns out Travis‘ brief transition to Hollywood was just as much about building team unity and cohesion instead of distracting himself from his obligations on the field.
It sent a message: that external interests can coexist with on-field discipline, as long as the culture remains rooted in accountability – something Kelce is famous for accepting.
The Chiefs kick off their preseason August 9 against the Arizona Cardinals before they open the 2025/26 NFL season by taking on the Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants in the opening three weeks.
