Competition at Texas’ home
Matthew Caldwell moved to Texas after a standout stint time at Troy, racking up over 1,600 yards and 13 touchdowns in the 2024 season. With more than 20 games started in college, Caldwell’s mix of wisdom, calm, and readiness puts him in a spot to shake things up for Manning’s privileged spot.
Coaches point out that the competition for the spot in practice stays open, with no set spot even if you do not play well. While Arch Manning goes into fall as the main pick, his backup is more than just a backup, he could perfectly slide right in.
Arch Manning’s time… to keep stepping up
Arch Manning, nephew of NFL legends Peyton and Eli Manning, has been in the limelight since his early school days. After redshirting in 2023 and playing a bit in 2024, 2025 holds massive hopes for him. However, those that know things say: there is no time to slack off.
Caldwell’s tremendous growth and ability on the field mean that even a small dip in form or focus from Arch or anyone else, might make room for a quarterback swich.
Internal push to take the best of him
With Texas eyeing a spot in the College Football Playoffs, the coaches seem set not to let the offense wobble. The Longhorns’ choice to bulk up their quarterback list is planned, looking at the hard demands of the role and the tough games in the coming SEC lineup.
Manning has the talent, pedigree, and leadership to do well, but Caldwell’s presence means he has to keep earning his place each week. Because Caldwell will certainly do so.
