Deion Sanders not surprised by Colorado win projections after positive cancer update sparks renewed optimism

Article arrow_drop_down

Today, Deion Sanders announced a major update: he has beaten cancer and will be back for his third season with Colorado-his first as a college coach without his son, Shedeur, as the starting quarterback. He’d been away from the team for a while due to health issues. Today, he revealed that he’d been battling serious bladder cancer, which he’s now overcome. He hopes to put it behind him soon. This is huge news, and I bet Deion will use this triumph to motivate himself and his players heading into the next season. His next big goal in Boulder should be winning at least a bowl game, something the Buffaloes haven’t done since 2004.

This will be his third year leading the team, and he’s shown steady progress. When he took over in 2023, Colorado was coming off a dismal one-win season, but Sanders turned it around with four wins that year. Last season, they jumped to nine wins, finished ranked 25th nationally, and saw Travis Hunter become the program’s second Heisman winner since Rashaan Salaam in 1994.

Win Projections Dip, But Sanders Stays Unfazed Post-Cancer News

For this season, with less than a month to go before it kicks off, the Buffaloes will field a very different squad from last year, starting with a new quarterback. That’s why projections are pegging them for fewer wins than the nine from 2024-a step back for Sanders’ project in Boulder.

Losing Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter to the NFL is the main reason outsiders expect a more average year. The QB spot will go to either Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter or freshman Julian “JuJu” Lewis, and it might take a village of playmakers to match Hunter’s output. With preseason camp starting after Deion’s press conference today, the latest analytics paint a modest picture.

ESPN’s Football Power Index sets the projected win total at 6.5 games, with a 6.5-5.5 record barely qualifying them for a bowl game. They hit a bowl in 69.5% of simulations (10th in the Big 12), win the conference in just 2.4%, and reach the Playoff in 3.1%, with a national title shot at a slim 0.1%. They rank 11th in the Big 12 behind teams like Arizona State (8.5) and Kansas State (8.3), facing seven of those squads in a tough 2025 slate. Still, Deion’s not sweating it-his cancer victory seems to fuel his confidence.

Home Stretch Offers Hope Despite Roster Shake-Up

Wins are earned on the field, and matching last year’s output seems difficult with a revamped roster, particularly at the crucial quarterback position, which remains unproven. However, Deion is a master motivator, and now that he has beaten cancer, he is likely to inspire his players to dig deep. Colorado has the advantage of hosting four of their first five games.

They will kick off against Georgia Tech on August 29 and Delaware on September 6 in Boulder. Then, they will travel to Houston before returning home for back-to-back games against Wyoming and TCU. A strong start could boost their odds of making another bowl appearance, and maybe even earning a ranking, by October. With Deion’s renewed energy, this team might just succeed despite the changes.

Wardley: If I beat Parker, Usyk will want to fight me

Fabio Wardley believes that if he beats Joseph Parker, undisputed world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk will want to fight him next. The winner of Wardley's October 25 bout with Parker will be the mandatory challenger for the WBO heavyweight title, one of the four world championships that Usyk holds. If Usyk is to retain the WBO belt he will have to fight the Wardley-Parker victor next. But the great Ukrainian will have other options and could always vacate that particular title. How the Aces’ bench flipped Game 1 and exposed the Mercury’s biggest weakness

The Las Vegas Aces showed everyone that a championship isn't won by stars alone. In Game 1 of the 2025 WNBA Finals, the Aces leaned heavily on their depth to snatch an 89-86 victory over the Phoenix Mercury, turning what looked like a likely loss into a statement win. Behind clutch contributions from the second unit, Las Vegas erased a late deficit and took control of the series before it even truly began.Phoenix held the lead for most of the night, fueled by standout performances from Kahleah Copper, Satou Sabally, and Alyssa Thomas. But when it mattered, the Aces' bench rose to the occasion. Dana Evans poured in 21 points off the bench, matching game highs held by four-time MVP A'ja Wilson and Copper. Yankees make bold call with Luis Gil for Game 1 as Boone hints more surprises ahead

The New York Yankees have turned heads just days before their American League Division Series begins. Manager Aaron Boone confirmed on Friday that Luis Gil will start Game 1 against the Toronto Blue Jays, even though the righthander was not on the Wild Card roster. He also allowed that further adjustments to the postseason roster remain possible.Boone told reporters simply, "Just feel like he's ready for this ... we feel like Luis is ready to go." "Luis Gil is starting Game 1 for the Yankees. Boone says there could be other roster changes for NY, ahead of Blue Jays series," MLB insider Mitch Bannon later tweeted, quoting Boone directly.Gil's selection is bold given the context: he missed much of the regular season with a high-grade lat strain and was not used in the Wild Card series. Nevertheless, he closed the […]

Not that it doesn't matter, but it's OK," she said when asked about what her team has learned. "This is a long series. I think the takeaway from those other first ones, the mindset was 'back to the drawing board.' We had the utmost confidence in our locker room and in our coaches to make the adjustments.
