Shocking new details have emerged about the identity of the Manhattan office building shooter who killed five people, including a NYPD officer, before taking his own life. Authorities confirmed the shooter as Shane Tamura, and internet sleuths have revealed new facts about the individual. Apparently, Tamura is a former high school football standout at the position of running back.

Once regarded as a gifted athlete with NFL potential, Tamura’s past has become a central part of the unfolding investigation, as questions grow about how a young man with a promising future ended up at the center of one of the city’s deadliest shootings in years.

Tamura, from glory to tragedy

According to information gathered from MaxPreps.com, Shane Tamura wore jersey #2 and played as a running back and defensive back at Granada Hills. Records show that he played for Granada Hills in the 2015 season and he rushed for 616 yards on 126 carries, averaging 4.9 yards per carry and scoring 5 rushing touchdowns. He also stood out on special teams, averaging 29.5 yards per kickoff return, earning regional recognition.

Earlier, as a junior varsity player at Golden Valley High School during the 2014-15 season, Tamura logged 774 rushing yards on 139 carries, with 11 touchdowns, along with 103 receiving yards and 298 kickoff return yards, as per his records on Hudl. He totaled 1,346 all-purpose yards, averaging over 134 yards per game.

Tamura didn’t get to the NFL, which sparks a line of investigation that could lead to a motive. Reports indicate he had a professional football stint in Canada.

Investigators analyze Tamura’s past

Law enforcement is now exploring whether Tamura’s past as a failed athlete played any role in his violent breakdown. While no manifesto or official motive has been found, early reports suggest Tamura harbored bitterness over his stalled football career. His social media activity has reportedly been scrubbed, but some sources indicate he followed multiple accounts to football scouting and league insiders, suggesting the NFL still loomed large in his mind.

Investigators are also looking to Tamura’s 2022 firearm permit, which was later revoked tue to a reported errativ behavior. Still, he somehow retained access to powerful weapons. As authorities dig deeper, one question hangs over the tragedy: how did a young man once full of promise and athletic talent fall so far, and why did it end in bloodshed on one of New York City’s busiest streets?
